Get used to seeing stripes because I may be sporting different kinds of stripes in my next couple of blog posts! Yes, I have been obsessed with florals lately, but I am ready to branch out and try some more patterns that I may have neglected in the past. This summer, I have really turned up my approach to fashion quite a few notches. I’m pushing my own boundaries—and the ones people place around curvy women. And this Cabin Cruiser Striped set from Fashion Nova REALLY challenged me.

Not only did the set include a bralet as a top, but the pants have the widest leg I have ever seen. These styles are two things I would usually avoid at all costs before I made a little commitment to myself to try EVERYTHING. I put on the outfit, and to be honest, I wasn’t in love at first sight. In fact, I had to wear the outfit a couple of times around the house until I felt comfortable enough to wear it out. This outfit was a huge risk for me, however, I loved the way I felt in it when I finally wore it. Sure, the pants may make my thighs look bigger than they are, but I still felt sexy in all of the extra fabric! The slit down the middle of the wide leg definitely highlighted my legs and thighs even in the loose-fitted pants. Good call Fashion Nova!

What are your thoughts on stripes? Do you rock them or avoid them?

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 3X in this Cabin Cruiser Striped set, which is one size larger than my usual size. The top was pretty tight, and I only wear a 40C. The pants were really big and I could have probably ordered a 1X or 2X, but then the top would have been far too small. Oh well, this is still a great look, in my opinion!

When I am in need of a little escape from real life, I slip into this outfit. Although I can’t run off on a  tropical getaway at a moments notice, this outfit makes me feel like I’m on a beach or sipping on a Piña Colada poolside. And I guess that’s a good enough getaway from my typical work dress pants and blazer.

The top and pants are part of the Brittany Sunrise Tropical set from Fashion Nova Curve,
and they are the newest addition to my collection of tropical floral printed garments that I have been obsessively wearing since the start of the summer. I love the cut of the pants because I don’t have anything currently like them in my closet. I also like that depending on how you walk, they could look like a skirt or pants. I love the idea of the one shoulder crop top. However, the top only sizes up to an XL, which is two sizes too small for me. While I was able to fit into it, the garment was a little tight. But altogether, this was an adorable outfit that had me feeling exotic and sexy!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a 3X in the Brittany Sunrise Tropical pants, which is one size larger than my usual size. I am wearing an XL in the Brittany Sunrise Tropical top, which is two sizes smaller than my usual size, but the largest size that the top comes in. The top is too small, and doesn’t provide much coverage for my chest.

Plus Size Scrubs from Jaanuu

67% of U.S. women wear a size 14 or larger, but many brands neglect to offer plus size clothing to meet this rising demand. And when it comes to the medical apparel industry, the choices for more than 13 million healthcare professionals are even more scarce.
While I don’t work in the healthcare industry, I have received many questions from my readers about where they can find flattering, well-fitted scrubs. Many of the medical scrubs in the market today are baggy and ill-fitting—especially for plus size women. As brands start to become more inclusive of the plus size figure by offering fashion-forward choices for full-figured women, it only makes sense that clothing suppliers for different industries—such as healthcare—start following suit as well.
Jaanuu, a medical apparel and nursing scrubs brand, is doing just that. Since its inception, the brand has introduced contemporary, runway-inspired antimicrobial finished medical apparel and scrubs. But more recently, the brand is fulfilling its core desire to be body positive and inclusive—empowering doctors and nurses of all shapes and sizes—filling a major gap in the plus size scrubs for women market.
Today, Jaanuu launched the first-ever fashion-forward plus size scrubs, and their approach is truly unique. Their inclusive sizing includes petite and tall sizes, and each style was fitted on an actual plus-size fit model—whereas most brands often create plus sizes by using a size six fit model and simply scaling up.
Digging into every aspect of the garment helped Jaanuu understand how clothes fit on plus-size women in general. For instance, they realized they had to widen the sleeve opening on their best-selling top—the Tulip top—to allow for better ease of movement and comfort. Jaanuu also developed a new ponte fabric that flatters the plus size figure while also providing extra stretch and comfort. Now, plus size women have the option of wearing a classic scrub look with the added comfort of a premium stretch fabric.
To put their extensive work to the test, Jaanuu conducted a wear test by sending samples to plus-size nurses across the U.S. and asking them to give them honest feedback after wearing the scrubs to work. I reached out to the brand to see if I could get a first-look of the scrubs, feel the material, and try them on for myself. I am wearing the Curve Ponte Combo Topand the Curve Ponte Cargo Pant, and the Ponte material is UNREAL. These scrubs feel like a combination between sweats and leggings, yet they look so sharp and professional.
Tops start at $39 and include a variety of different styles including the Tulip top, Button Waist top, and Peplum top. Bottoms start at $42 and include a wide range of color and pattern designs to allow customers to mix and match their favorite styles. These styles can be found in sizes 1X-3X, and they will be sold at the same price point as the brand’s straight sizes—AWESOME!
SIZING INFO: I am wearing a 2X in the Curve Ponte Cargo Pant and the Curve Ponte Combo top, which is my usual size, and both garments fit perfectly!
Check out the brand’s video campaign #EmpowerTheCurve below!

Thank you to Jaanuu for partnering with me and sponsoring today’s post. Traditional scrubs haven’t been updated since the 1970s, but Jaanuu’s experienced team of designers have created contemporary designs that are reflective of current fashion trends and made with the industry’s first premium antimicrobial-finished medical apparel manufactured to withstand harsh hospital conditions. Thank you for supporting brands that make Natalie in the City possible.

As the days of summer are winding down, I am slowly mourning the adventurous take I have had on fashion this season. Bright colors, tropical florals, daring styles, and new trends have made more appearances in my looks than ever before. I really took some chances this summer and tried trends I told myself I never would. So I will miss summer for that reason, and also because of this Beneath the Flower Jumpsuit from Fashion Nova Curve.

I always shied away from jumpsuits because I felt that they weren’t flattering on a curvier figure, but the plunging neckline, sheer fabric, and pattern made me second guess one of my biggest fashion rules. I love how versatile this jumpsuit is. I could see myself wearing out while running errands or during a tropical vacation. Fashion Nova has been my best girlfriend when it comes to tropical floral prints and daring cuts. I couldn’t get enough of this plunging neckline feature. I have nothing like it in my closet, and I felt super sexy while wearing the jumpsuit.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a 3X in the Beneath the Flower Jumpsuit, which is one size larger than my usual size. The fabric does not stretch at all and zips in the back right above the butt. So if you have big booty, like me, this jumpsuit may be a little hard to squeeze into. I could barely get it zipped in the back. However, the top of the blouse is pretty loose fitting, and my girls had a lot of room! If the brand sold a 4X, I would have probably ordered that size.

My Go-To Wedding Guest Dress

I always have to have one dress in my closet that is versatile and classic so that I can wear it many different ways and it won’t go out of style. I also want to be able to wear this dress to events as formal as a wedding, as casual as a Sunday brunch with my gal pals, and everything in between.
Is it possible? Yes, in fact, I can actually dress this plus size black floral party dress up and down as much as I like! Don’t believe it? Read along to see how I styled this dress for work, a wedding, a Sunday brunch, and even more!
I work in a business casual environment where you could find people wearing anything from pantsuits to jeans and a button up shirt, but I like to err on the side of business attire with a playful touch. I love pairing this plus size black floral party dress from Sydney’s Closet with a fun blazer, like the one I’m wearing with mesh sleeves. Pairing the dress with a business casual piece makes the garment practical for a day at the office.

When you get a wedding invite, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For many of my friends it’s, “WHAT DO I WEAR?!” The underlying rule is to never out dress the bride, but unless you show up in a wedding gown, I doubt that will happen! However, I still want to look stunning at this wedding—even though it isn’t my day. That’s another reason why I love this dress. While it’s not a body con dress, it’s still so flattering and hugs my curves in the right places. It’s fun, flirty, and classic, and I can totally wear the dress to a few weddings in a row by changing around my accessories, and no one would notice! The dress comes with a black wraparound shall, which you could wrap around your shoulders or tie around your neck!

And now onto my favorite activity of the weekend, BRUNCH! My go-to brunch spots vary from pancake houses (and sometimes McDonalds) to chic, French bakeries—in the words of my best friend, “My interests are broad, okay? And on this Sunday, I stopped by Maison Marcel in Chicago for some fresh croissants and a cappuccino. And since the café is definitely not a pancake house, I went full-on glam for it. I paired my Sydney’s Closet black floral party dress with a sequin blazer and some pearls.

While these are just three ways that I wear my plus size black floral party dress from Sydney’s Closet, there are many other ways I could wear it and a variety of events I could wear it to. Since it boasts a monochromatic color scheme and a versatile floral pattern, I could rock this dress at a company or family holiday party, a cocktail event, a fashion show, and to a black-tie event. For my high school and college girls out there, this dress could also make the perfect homecoming look!
SIZING INFO:Based on the sizing chart, I sized up two sizes to a size 22, because I know how formal dresses don’t have much stretch in them. However, I actually would have been fine with a size 20. The breast area of the dress has more than enough room for the ladies!
Thank you to Sydney’s Closet for partnering with me and sponsoring today’s post. Sydney’s Closet aims to “size up glamour” by offering on-trend plus size special occasion dresses in sizes 14-40! Phyllis Brasch Librach, President and Founder of the company, started Sydney’s Closet after learning how hard it was for plus size teenagers to find prom and homecoming dresses through her daughter’s very own experience. The reality is that one in every four high school girls and six out of 10 women in the U.S. wears a size 12 or larger. Over the last decade, the company has dressed tens and thousands of plus-size teens and women across the U.S. Thank you for supporting brands that make Natalie in the City possible

Fat Brat: Accepting the Word “Fat”

I’ve been called “fat” almost my entire life. The word was spewed at me as an insult from kids on the playground in elementary school, boyfriends, and mean girls in high school. The word is still used to belittle me and many other women. And while I used to let it get to me in high school, I’ve stopped letting the word “fat” bother me. It’s what I am: fat. AND IT’S NOT A BAD WORD.

I’ve changed a lot throughout my life, but one thing has always remained; I’ve always been a big girl. Through my life changes and different stages, I have learned to love and accept my body, and with that, I have also changed the way I view the word “fat.” Sure, I have days where I wish the fat away and I let the online bullies get to me—NEWS FLASH: EVERYONE HAS THESE DAYS! But I am happiest when I accept myself and embrace the fat! YEAH, I SAID IT: EMBRACE THE FAT! It’s me, it’s beautiful, and it makes me unique. And guess what? More women in the U.S. are “fat” than they are skinny. And what better way to hold myself accountable for reclaiming the word “fat,” by wearing it proudly!

My good friend Corissa from the plus size lifestyle blog Fat Girl Flow designed these amazing t-shirts that are giving me all of the body positive vibes and encouraging me to embrace my self and my body to the fullest! You can get your top here: Fat Brat Tee
I paired the t-shirt with this plus size metallic skirt from Forever 21, because why not?!
SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 2X, which is my usual size, and the t-shirt fits perfectly! It’s super stretchy. I am also wearing a size 2X in the metallic skirt, which is my usual size, and the fit is spot on!

Don’t you just love a piece of clothing that makes you feel girly and also gives off romantic vibes? Yeah, ask me that question a month ago and I would have rolled my eyes. But lately, I have been searching for femininity and romance every where. And it has totally translated into the pieces I have been featuring on my blog and wearing.

This Bardot Culotte Jumpsuit from Yours Clothing is a piece unlike any other in my closet. I love that while this romper loosely drapes and is comprised of a lot of fabric, it’s still flattering and flirty. Since I am only 5 ft. 2 in. tall, I paired the romper with a pair of lace up block heels to elongate my figure. I feel like this romper might drown my figure if I wore flats.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in this jumpsuit, which is a size larger than my usual size and it fits perfectly. I would suggest ordering one size larger than your usual size to achieve that draping effect.

Not Your Average Romper

I’m deeming this post a Fashion Nova appreciation blog post—and no, this is not sponsored! When the brand first hit the Instagram scene with it’s booty hugging jeans, I was skeptical, but lately, I have been obsessed with all of the plus size options the store has. And get this, they update their clothing selections on a weekly basis. When I started looking at clothing from Fashion Nova, I became more open minded. The clothing boasted high slits, bright colors, bold prints, and showed lots of skin. I was impressed. Usually, plus size clothing is not this edgy or sexy. And in a world of loose fitting and boring plus size clothing options, I needed a little Fashion Nova to bring me back to the very reason I fell in love with fashion: Being able to express the many sides and styles of myself.

A couple of months ago, I would have never pushed myself to embrace more colors or risky designs. I always shied away from rompers—especially form fitting ones—but when I saw this Roll With The Clique Romper, I was feeling adventurous, and I knew I had to try it out. This piece is so fun and sexy, but unfortunately the only way to get it on and off is with a zipper in the back. So as long as you have a girl squad or friend to help unzip you during bathroom trips, you’re good to go! I’d love to wear this out to the club. It would be a head turner, and I feel like it’s different from every other romper out there.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a 3X, which is a size larger than my usual size. The shorts and sleeves fit pretty snug, but the top is stretchy.

I spend most of my weekdays in the office—about 40 hours to be exact. So when I create an office look that I love, it’s a huge win because these are the outfits that I have to wear every day. Just because I have a dress code to follow at work, doesn’t mean that my outfits have to be boring and basic. For example, this ensemble totally adheres to my company’s dress code, but this electric yellow neoprene pencil skirt and the bell sleeves on this elbow flounce top from Eloquii fall far from average. And not to mention that I feel like a total boss when I am wearing this look!

This entire look is from Eloquii, and I only saw it fit to name this post and look “POWER MOVES” because Eloquii is making quite the power move itself. In August, Eloquii will open its second brick and mortar store in Chicago! The store will be located on the Magnificent Mile in The Shops at North Bridge. I can’t wait until the store opens, and I will be sure to keep you all posted with the details.

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing an 18 petite in the neon skirt, which is my usual size, and a size 18 in the flounce top, which is my usual size. Both garments fit true to size!

Kimono Vibes

I have one question, WHO AM I?! I cannot believe that I have traded my all-black-everything wardrobe in for florals and bright colors. While I would have never thought this style change would have happened, I am so happy that it did. Being more open-minded to different clothing styles, colors, and fits have turned me into a totally different fashionista.

My latest floral obsession is from Fashion Nova Curve. This Look At Me set is made up of polyester shorts, a cropped tank top, and a jacket. I love, love, love the set! I can’t wait to wear this kimono jacket with other outfits. It’s so divine and fun! This look makes me feel sexy and flirty. While the tank top and shorts are very thin and show a lot of skin, the oversized kimono adds some coverage and brings ties the three-piece look together. If you are totally loving this set, use the code “NATINTHECITY” for 20% off!

As you can probably see, I also wore this top without a bra, which works for my C cup-size chest. If you have any personal questions about fit, please send me an email at natinthecity@gmail.com!

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a 3x in the top, shorts, and the jacket, which is a size larger than my usual. the material doesn’t stretch at all—other than the waistband on the shorts. So, I suggest ordering one or two sizes larger than your usual size.

EDIT: 10/31/21: Are you petite and plus size like me? I’m 5’2 and a size 18! If so, you might want to check out my blog post about 12 petite plus size clothing brands to shop to learn where you can find the perfect jeans for your figure!

A major brand reposted one of my outfit photos on their Instagram page over the weekend. The likes went down, and the comments went up—and they weren’t good. People quickly posted out my stomach and how it looked in a high-waist denim skirt. The lower area of my stomach, which I call my “pouch,” has always been a huge insecurity of mine. I usually wear blouses and tops that cover this area, and I rarely ever tuck in my tops or wear crop tops with fitted bottoms. I get nasty comments all the time, but these ones stuck with me because I decided to embrace my “pouch” with this outfit regardless of the way I felt about it. But ladies, I’m going to keep it moving, and the only way I see fit to say “F U” to all the haters is to post another outfit showing off my pouch!

THIS IS A RARE SIGHT. NEVER HAVE I EVER LEFT THE HOUSE IN A PAIR OF JEANS WITH A CROP TOP. But today, I embraced my body in these plus size Cello Jeans and this gorgeous H&M ribbon-embroidered crop top. I know it can be hard to have confidence when people are constantly tearing you down, but the best way to rise above it is to just keep rocking your curves, and most importantly, keep wearing the trends and clothes you LOVE.

How I really feel about mom jeans

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in Cello Jeans, which is a size larger than my usual size. I would suggest ordering two sizes larger than your original size because the jeans do run small!

I’ve been embracing a lot of color lately, and I realized that I actually love wearing color! Who would have thought that a girl who asks, “Do you have this in black?” would be having a blast with a new, colorful wardrobe? I never thought I’d see the day. With that being said, I am resorting back to my old ways for this post, but don’t fret, there is a hint of blush in this ensemble! And starting next week, we’ll be back to colorful outfits!

These Black and White Mono Stripe Print Tapered Trousers from Yours Clothing served as the inspiration for this look. I have been eying pants like this for a while and I always worried how they would look on me, but I decided to finally take the leap and try them out. I wanted to create a fun, casual outfit that could also double as an office look. So, I paired the trousers with this adorable nude pink scalloped frill top and a black stripe maxi length button down sleeveless shirt. Both the black maxi and pink scallop top are from Yours Clothing, but they just sold out. So I have included some similar options in the shop widget below! I also topped off the look with my new pair of Colorful Round Monoblock sunnies from SunglassUp. What do you guys think of the style? I usually stick to aviators, but I really wanted to try something new.

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 20 in these tapered trousers, which is two sizes larger than what I usually wear. These trousers run small, so I suggest sizing up two or three sizes!
