Fat Brat: Accepting the Word “Fat”

I’ve been called “fat” almost my entire life. The word was spewed at me as an insult from kids on the playground in elementary school, boyfriends, and mean girls in high school. The word is still used to belittle me and many other women. And while I used to let it get to me in high school, I’ve stopped letting the word “fat” bother me. It’s what I am: fat. AND IT’S NOT A BAD WORD.

I’ve changed a lot throughout my life, but one thing has always remained; I’ve always been a big girl. Through my life changes and different stages, I have learned to love and accept my body, and with that, I have also changed the way I view the word “fat.” Sure, I have days where I wish the fat away and I let the online bullies get to me—NEWS FLASH: EVERYONE HAS THESE DAYS! But I am happiest when I accept myself and embrace the fat! YEAH, I SAID IT: EMBRACE THE FAT! It’s me, it’s beautiful, and it makes me unique. And guess what? More women in the U.S. are “fat” than they are skinny. And what better way to hold myself accountable for reclaiming the word “fat,” by wearing it proudly!

My good friend Corissa from the plus size lifestyle blog Fat Girl Flow designed these amazing t-shirts that are giving me all of the body positive vibes and encouraging me to embrace my self and my body to the fullest! You can get your top here: Fat Brat Tee
I paired the t-shirt with this plus size metallic skirt from Forever 21, because why not?!
SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 2X, which is my usual size, and the t-shirt fits perfectly! It’s super stretchy. I am also wearing a size 2X in the metallic skirt, which is my usual size, and the fit is spot on!

Don’t you just love a piece of clothing that makes you feel girly and also gives off romantic vibes? Yeah, ask me that question a month ago and I would have rolled my eyes. But lately, I have been searching for femininity and romance every where. And it has totally translated into the pieces I have been featuring on my blog and wearing.

This Bardot Culotte Jumpsuit from Yours Clothing is a piece unlike any other in my closet. I love that while this romper loosely drapes and is comprised of a lot of fabric, it’s still flattering and flirty. Since I am only 5 ft. 2 in. tall, I paired the romper with a pair of lace up block heels to elongate my figure. I feel like this romper might drown my figure if I wore flats.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in this jumpsuit, which is a size larger than my usual size and it fits perfectly. I would suggest ordering one size larger than your usual size to achieve that draping effect.

I’m deeming this post a Fashion Nova appreciation blog post—and no, this is not sponsored! When the brand first hit the Instagram scene with it’s booty hugging jeans, I was skeptical, but lately, I have been obsessed with all of the plus size options the store has. And get this, they update their clothing selections on a weekly basis. When I started looking at clothing from Fashion Nova, I became more open minded. The clothing boasted high slits, bright colors, bold prints, and showed lots of skin. I was impressed. Usually, plus size clothing is not this edgy or sexy. And in a world of loose fitting and boring plus size clothing options, I needed a little Fashion Nova to bring me back to the very reason I fell in love with fashion: Being able to express the many sides and styles of myself.

A couple of months ago, I would have never pushed myself to embrace more colors or risky designs. I always shied away from rompers—especially form fitting ones—but when I saw this Roll With The Clique Romper, I was feeling adventurous, and I knew I had to try it out. This piece is so fun and sexy, but unfortunately the only way to get it on and off is with a zipper in the back. So as long as you have a girl squad or friend to help unzip you during bathroom trips, you’re good to go! I’d love to wear this out to the club. It would be a head turner, and I feel like it’s different from every other romper out there.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a 3X, which is a size larger than my usual size. The shorts and sleeves fit pretty snug, but the top is stretchy.

I spend most of my weekdays in the office—about 40 hours to be exact. So when I create an office look that I love, it’s a huge win because these are the outfits that I have to wear every day. Just because I have a dress code to follow at work, doesn’t mean that my outfits have to be boring and basic. For example, this ensemble totally adheres to my company’s dress code, but this electric yellow neoprene pencil skirt and the bell sleeves on this elbow flounce top from Eloquii fall far from average. And not to mention that I feel like a total boss when I am wearing this look!

This entire look is from Eloquii, and I only saw it fit to name this post and look “POWER MOVES” because Eloquii is making quite the power move itself. In August, Eloquii will open its second brick and mortar store in Chicago! The store will be located on the Magnificent Mile in The Shops at North Bridge. I can’t wait until the store opens, and I will be sure to keep you all posted with the details.

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing an 18 petite in the neon skirt, which is my usual size, and a size 18 in the flounce top, which is my usual size. Both garments fit true to size!

Kimono Vibes

I have one question, WHO AM I?! I cannot believe that I have traded my all-black-everything wardrobe in for florals and bright colors. While I would have never thought this style change would have happened, I am so happy that it did. Being more open-minded to different clothing styles, colors, and fits have turned me into a totally different fashionista.

My latest floral obsession is from Fashion Nova Curve. This Look At Me set is made up of polyester shorts, a cropped tank top, and a jacket. I love, love, love the set! I can’t wait to wear this kimono jacket with other outfits. It’s so divine and fun! This look makes me feel sexy and flirty. While the tank top and shorts are very thin and show a lot of skin, the oversized kimono adds some coverage and brings ties the three-piece look together. If you are totally loving this set, use the code “NATINTHECITY” for 20% off!

As you can probably see, I also wore this top without a bra, which works for my C cup-size chest. If you have any personal questions about fit, please send me an email at natinthecity@gmail.com!

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a 3x in the top, shorts, and the jacket, which is a size larger than my usual. the material doesn’t stretch at all—other than the waistband on the shorts. So, I suggest ordering one or two sizes larger than your usual size.

EDIT: 10/31/21: Are you petite and plus size like me? I’m 5’2 and a size 18! If so, you might want to check out my blog post about 12 petite plus size clothing brands to shop to learn where you can find the perfect jeans for your figure!

A major brand reposted one of my outfit photos on their Instagram page over the weekend. The likes went down, and the comments went up—and they weren’t good. People quickly posted out my stomach and how it looked in a high-waist denim skirt. The lower area of my stomach, which I call my “pouch,” has always been a huge insecurity of mine. I usually wear blouses and tops that cover this area, and I rarely ever tuck in my tops or wear crop tops with fitted bottoms. I get nasty comments all the time, but these ones stuck with me because I decided to embrace my “pouch” with this outfit regardless of the way I felt about it. But ladies, I’m going to keep it moving, and the only way I see fit to say “F U” to all the haters is to post another outfit showing off my pouch!

THIS IS A RARE SIGHT. NEVER HAVE I EVER LEFT THE HOUSE IN A PAIR OF JEANS WITH A CROP TOP. But today, I embraced my body in these plus size Cello Jeans and this gorgeous H&M ribbon-embroidered crop top. I know it can be hard to have confidence when people are constantly tearing you down, but the best way to rise above it is to just keep rocking your curves, and most importantly, keep wearing the trends and clothes you LOVE.

How I really feel about mom jeans

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in Cello Jeans, which is a size larger than my usual size. I would suggest ordering two sizes larger than your original size because the jeans do run small!

I’ve been embracing a lot of color lately, and I realized that I actually love wearing color! Who would have thought that a girl who asks, “Do you have this in black?” would be having a blast with a new, colorful wardrobe? I never thought I’d see the day. With that being said, I am resorting back to my old ways for this post, but don’t fret, there is a hint of blush in this ensemble! And starting next week, we’ll be back to colorful outfits!

These Black and White Mono Stripe Print Tapered Trousers from Yours Clothing served as the inspiration for this look. I have been eying pants like this for a while and I always worried how they would look on me, but I decided to finally take the leap and try them out. I wanted to create a fun, casual outfit that could also double as an office look. So, I paired the trousers with this adorable nude pink scalloped frill top and a black stripe maxi length button down sleeveless shirt. Both the black maxi and pink scallop top are from Yours Clothing, but they just sold out. So I have included some similar options in the shop widget below! I also topped off the look with my new pair of Colorful Round Monoblock sunnies from SunglassUp. What do you guys think of the style? I usually stick to aviators, but I really wanted to try something new.

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 20 in these tapered trousers, which is two sizes larger than what I usually wear. These trousers run small, so I suggest sizing up two or three sizes!

I found the secret to feeling like a goddess, and it’s this dress. As soon as I slipped this maxi dress on, I felt like the baddest chick on the planet! It’s off the shoulder, it has high slits, and the tropical floral print is divine. I wore this dress out while shopping, and it was definitely a head turner. One of the best feelings to me is knowing that I have a piece of clothing in my closet that can transform my mood, confidence, and day as soon as I put it on. And for me, this dress just became that garment.

I found this Night Moves dress on Fashion Nova, and although it comes in plus sizes, it also comes in straight sizes, too! So all of my non-plus size baddies can also wear this dress! I love the material, which is made up of polyester and spandex. It’s breathable, but it’s also heavier than your typical fabric so it doesn’t blow around too much in the wind. The dress also comes with an inner shorts lining to provide some extra coverage since the double slits are so high up. A downside to the inner shorts lining is that you essentially have to get naked to use the bathroom—similarly to if you were wearing a romper—but I would get naked in the bathroom 50 times a day for this dress, honestly. HAH!

If you want to unleash your inner goddess, use the code “NATALIEXCRAIG” for 15% off of your next Fashion Nova purchase! If you are totally feeling these tropical floral vibes, I have put together a list of tropical maxi dresses that you can shop below! Enjoy!

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 2X in this dress, which is my usual size. The dress runs true to size and is very stretchy!

Rihanna Bryson tiller, Rihanna red top wild thoughts, wild thoughts music video, Rihanna style, plus size fashion, fatshion, curves and confidence, curvy, summer plus size fashion

After I saw DJ Khaled’s new music video for “Wild Thoughts,” featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, I could not get Rihanna’s red, cropped, off-the-shoulder blouse out of my mind! So, naturally, I ran to Forever 21, H&M, TJ Maxx, and Marshals to try and find a similar top. To no avail, I started to panic. I HAD TO HAVE THE RED BLOUSE! Then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted this bright red top shoved into the size small section on a rack at TJ Maxx. How crazy would it be if the one piece of red clothing in this whole store was my size and it somehow got misplaced in the small section? “No way,” I thought to myself. But, I grabbed the top with my eyes closed and counted to myself “1, 2, 3…..” (GUYS IT IS REALLY NOT THAT SERIOUS, BUT ALSO IT IS.) I opened my eyes, and sure enough the tag on the top said “XL.” I’m pretty sure I let out a little scream.

Sure, the blouse I am wearing in this outfit is far from the one Rihanna was wearing, but it’s off-the-shoulder and red, and I had nothing like it in my closet. As soon as I slipped the blouse on, I knew I had to have it. Since I did find this blouse at TJ Maxx, I don’t have a link to the exact one, but I will include multiple options below in the shop widget, and here is the closet replica: Off-The-Shoulder-Top With Fluted Sleeves.

I didn’t have a groovy pair of pants to complete Rihanna’s exact look, but I styled the blouse with some gray, acid-wash shorts that I bought at Forever 21 Plus three years ago and a pair of lace-up block heels. I wore this ensemble out to lunch, and I was definitely feeling sexy and sassy!

DATE NIGHT LOOK: MUTED FLORALS AND TULLE

Do you remember when I tried my first tutu? I was a little skeptical and really nervous. I usually only wear clothes that are form fitting, and I shy away from extra fabric at all costs. But when I slid on my first Society + tutu, I knew it was something special, and that the skirt would be worth the fashion risk I was about to take.

Since I ended up loving this tutu, I have been dying to incorporate another one into my wardrobe. Enter this fabulous, limited edition Society + Juliet Printed tutu! As I mentioned previously, I was a little unsure about wearing a tutu, and I can also be hesitant when it comes to wearing florals. But the Juliet Printed Tutu is the right amount of tutu mixed with florals, and the little details make it all that more special. A thin layer of tulle drapes over the floral printed skirt, which mutes the print, and gives the skirt a little bit of volume. I could totally see myself incorporating this tutu into some of my every day looks since the skirt has much less volume than the first tutu I tried, which I really like.

At first sight, I knew this skirt would be perfect for a date night look. It’s romantic, flirty, and playful. And since the skirt adds a lot of volume to the look, I knew I could wear something super sexy and form fitting on top, like the Torrid bralette I am wearing. I love wearing bralettes as tops, but I can admit that they can feel a little revealing, which is why I like to wear a light coat or jacket over them, too. I have had this military style coat in my closet for years, and it always assists in some of my favorite outfits. I love that it adds another element of interest to this ensemble. Because this coat doesn’t actually exist online anywhere because I bought it five years ago, I found a similar style on Eloquii.

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a size 14/16 in the Society + Juliet Printed Tutu, which was a little small in terms of the waistband. The waistband does stretch, but the satin material over the elastic waistband doesn’t. I would recommend ordering a size up. Instead of pulling the skirt on like I usually do, I slid the skirt over my head, and it fit perfect (Gotta love a big booty, hah!). I am wearing a size 2, which is my usual size (28-40 C) in the Torrid bralette, and it fits perfectly!

DENIM SKIRT AND A SWEATSHIRT

I am definitely #TeamCasual. However, I am also known for using the term “casual” too loosely and just rocking gym clothes. Feel me? Since I’m a recovering gym gear wear-aholic, I have been trying to create looks that are put together, but casual, and still a little fashion forward.

I love that the denim skirt is coming back into style, and I have been trying to find the perfect one to start working into my wardrobe for the summer. The search is still on, but I couldn’t help but fall in love with this Daliah Skirt in medium blue from Fashion Nova Curve. The skirt is definitely #teamcasual, too, because it’s so comfortable and can be worn with anything. I ordered 3X (a size larger than my usual size) in this skirt because from the looks of it online, I thought it may not be super stretchy. But I should have stuck with a 2X because the skirt definitely stretches. But beware: the Daliah skirt can be a little short if you aren’t used to rocking high hem lines. I personally love the length, though.

The casual party doesn’t stop there, y’all. On top, I’m wearing the Spotless Mind Top in coco, also from Fashion Nova Curve. I love that this piece is just an oversized sweatshirt that bunches at the sleeves, and because of the way it falls, it makes this piece more special. I could totally see myself rocking this top with a pair of yoga pants….. SEE?! I CAN’T STOP WEARING GYM GEAR. HELP! I’m laughing out loud as I type this last sentence because I am literally thinking, “Yeah I can’t wait to wear this sweatshirt with my sweats. mwuahahahaha.” I have a problem!

SIZING INFO: I’m wearing a 3X in the Daliah Skirt, which is a size larger than my usual size. I should have stuck with a 2X because this skirt is super stretchy! I am wearing a 2x in the Spotless Mind Top, which is my usual size.

BOHEMIAN CHIC

I’m kind of weird. I love the idea of summer, but I always feel kind of uninspired when it comes to summer fashion. I face the same dilemma every year: It’s 90°and I should wear shorts or a skirt. While that sounds great, I do a lot of walking since I rely on that and public transportation to get around the city. And lots of walking = lots of chub rub, and chub rub is my worst enemy. Given that situation, I should wear leggings or jeans, but then I will be hot. So, I usually throw my arms up and say, “Oh well, just aim for comfort and put on some yoga capris, a loose tank top and some sneakers.” But then I feel so mad at myself for stepping out in gym gear when I see everyone dressed so cute! Like I said, I’m kind of weird.

Well, this weekend, I pushed my limits, and put together this colorful (who am I?!) summer ensemble. I recently got these boho printed shorts from my Stitch Fix box and decided to pair them with this yellow (also comes in gray) bodysuit from Forever 21. I was heading out to a nice restaurant for brunch, so I wanted to top the look off with a burgundy duster cardigan to make it a tad more modest. I was feeling vibrant and summery in this look, until I sat down at a restaurant and noticed the under boob sweat accumulating and showing through this yellow body suit. OH. MY. GOD. I was panicking! “This is why I stick to all black gym gear,” I said to myself. I ran home to change almost immediately. And for the rest of the weekend I thought about how I could combat boob sweat while wearing form fitting, thin, light-colored clothing. I wasn’t wearing a bra, which was probably part of the problem, but I haven’t really been able to pin point what I could do to keep under boob sweat from happening. Someone help! If you have any ideas or tricks you use to mitigate under boob sweat, please drop them in the comment section below!
