ALL ABOUT THE CITY

Days off are for trekking out to the edge of the city and having fun with photo shoots. At least that is what it looks like for my best friend, Miss Melony Melrose and I.
Our weekdays are so hectic at the newspaper and after an 18-hour production day on Friday we are ready to run wild through the city by the time Saturday rolls around—that is if we make it out of bed before 5:00 PM.
While there is no other feeling in the world than looking up and seeing nothing but skyscrapers—especially when you come from FarmVille, USA—sometimes it’s nice to look at the city from a different perspective.
But less about my obsession with the city’s skyline and more about my outfit!
Since temperatures have left Chicago a little chilly and brisk, I have no other feeling than pure excitement as I pull out the “fall clothes” bin from my closet. Sweaters, scarves, and knee-high socks, OH MY! Fall is my favorite season of all time and although the sweaters with cut-out sleeves (similar to the one I’m wearing) were hot last fall, it looks like they are making a comeback this season.
‘Tis the season for pumpkin spice and everything nice!

My photographer and I decided to sneak out just as the sun was setting to capture these photos. I love the way they turned out! This outfit has become one of my summer staples. It’s a simple and soft look, but the ripped shorts add a little attitude! I usually wear a lot of black, but I have been trying to change it up with pastels and beige tones, and I’m rather happy with this fashion transition.

OFF TO THE RACES

Thanks to America’s Best Racing, my friends and I enjoyed the most perfect fashion outing at the Arlington Park Race Track. The day was filled with horse races, fun, and fashion, of course!

We spent the whole day on the Paddock getting a first hand look at the horses before they raced, and then we ventured to the track where we cheered for our top picks. I always picked the gray horse to bet on, apparently that’s a bad superstition at the track. Well, at least my outfit was on point!

I took a break from the busy city of Chicago for a week and headed back home to Boise, Idaho. As you can see, the timezone, climate and scenery weren’t the only things that changed as I flew to the west. My style took a little shift and I was embracing laid back ensembles distant from my usual urban attire.
I never realized just how much the environment you’re in can influence the style choices you make. Although I’m not a huge fan of country living, I enjoyed having a slightly different style and embracing another side of fashion I didn’t know I could rock!
But… I’m happy to be back in Chicago!

CHALLENGE: LOVE YOURSELF

When you look in the mirror, what do you say about your reflection?
“I need to go to the gym.”
“My arms are flabby.”
“I have dark circles under my eyes.”
“My hair is too frizzy, too straight, or too curly.”
“I hate my nose, ears, smile, and eyebrows.”
Most people negatively critique their appearance, which can affect the way people carry themselves throughout the day. These negative impressions not only lead to depression, anxiety, and a lack of self-esteem, but also contribute to an unrealistic standard of beauty.
Some argue that we are so negative about our bodies, beauties, and imperfections because of impractical standards of beauty that are forced upon our society by the media and advertisements.

However, this is far from the truth. The fashion, media, and advertising industries capitalize on our society’s insecurities. They take advantage of those insecurities to create a sense of desire and urgency for their products with ideas such as: “If you buy this makeup, you won’t have dark circles under your eyes; If you buy this dress you will appear curvy and not chubby; If you buy this hair product you can have beautiful hair.”

These insecurities that we develop affect more than your overall persona. They can also shape the way friends, employers, and colleagues view you.
For Example, have you ever listened to someone giving a great speech and he or she suddenly stops in the middle of the speech to say, “Sorry, I’m so nervous.” This causes you to focus on the nervousness of the speaker and away from the positive things you noticed about the speaker.

Have you ever had someone refuse a compliment and then provide a counter argument detailing why you shouldn’t compliment that person? Or have you been on the receiving side of a compliment and said, “Thanks, but I really don’t like this skirt. I had nothing else to wear.”

People want to see the best in you and may not notice your flaws until you point them out. Just like the speaker was doing an excellent job in your eyes until their nerves were brought to your attention.

I am guilty of all the above. I catch myself saying, “I need to do some more crunches, and my hair is a mess.” I will focus on those negative accusations I place upon myself all day, which limits my confidence and the ability to be outgoing and do amazing things.

When I focus on the qualities that I love about myself, I notice my confidence skyrocket and my insecurities shrink. The little flaws I did notice disappear as I continue to recognize my true potential and love myself.

If you woke up tomorrow and pointed out the things you love about yourself instead of the negative qualities you think you have, how powerful and confident would you feel throughout the day?

Over time your flaws will become your assets and you’ll realize that the imperfections you see in yourself could be a positive attribution in someone else’s eyes.

As a society we could change the standard of beauty and how it’s portrayed throughout the media, fashion, and advertising industries by appreciating ourselves.

I have a challenge for you:
As you are getting ready for your day, point out three things that you love about yourself. Whether these features are personality or physical qualities, make it a point to look at yourself in a mirror and cherish the beauty that you portray inside and out. After a week of praising yourself, reflect on how you feel in terms of self-esteem, your attitude throughout the week, and some of the things you accomplished. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

GUEST BLOG: MEET CHARMAINE

Charmaine Simmons couldn’t keep her love for fashion all to her self, so in the summer of 2011 she embarked on her fashion blogging career with the goal to inspire her readers. Although the 20-year-old South Shore of Chicago Native has a busy schedule at the University of Illinois at Urbana– Champaign, she always puts her blog Sincerely, Evonne in the forefront and loves to interact with her readers through social media.

What is the main goal of your blog?
Charmaine Simmons: My main goal is to share and inspire. I want to share my love for fashion and beauty. Also, I want to inspire people to wear whatever they want without caring about what others think.

What is more important beauty or fashion?
CS: I would say both. Beauty is important because confidence is the most beautiful thing you can have. Fashion is important because clothes can make you feel confident on days when you feel horrible. You can express yourself through both make-up and clothes.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
CS: I would like to be living in New York and either be a fashion editor at a big fashion magazine or working on a PR team of a famous fashion company. I just want to be in the fashion industry and surrounded by people with positive energy. Also, I would like to be dating Michael B. Jordan. Hey, a girl can dream!

What makes you different?
CS: I am a black girl from the “hood” of Chicago, but you would not know that if you did not know me. I love fashion so much and my style is very versatile. I am a prime example of how you can work in fashion no matter where you come from.

What is one of your favorites at the moment?
CS: I would have to say NAR’s Orgasm Illuminator as a beauty item. This is basically the definition of “bae” in my life. It adds the perfect glow to your face.

What is your life motto?
CS: “Dress like the person you want to be,” is my favorite fashion quote. This is why I only own one pair of sweatpants as a college student. I dress like a fashion editor/PR maven every day. “If your dreams don’t scare you, they not big enough” is my favorite life quote. Where I’m from, people aren’t usually successful in life. I am going to be the exception, and this quote motivates me to keep going on days when I want to give up.

What projects are you currently working on for the blog?
CS: I recently just filmed mini videos for L’Oreal. Also, my big hair chop anniversary from when I went natural is coming up. I plan on making a personal video for that too. Who knows, I may start doing videos more. Only time can tell. I am always brainstorming and coming up with new ideas.

Check out Charmaine’s blog, keep up with her on Instagram, chat with her on Twitter @C_Evonne, and stay tuned for her guest blogs on Natalie in the City!

SPRING BREAK GETAWAY

My spring break away from the freezing cold of Chicago, and what seemed like endless days of school and work, was a success. I spent the past week in Boise, Idaho with my family, friends, and my cat. It was consistently warm in Boise so it was nice to shed the fifty layers of clothing I need to survive a Chicago winter that doesn’t want to admit it is spring time.
Boise was great to me with temperatures above 60 degrees all week, which meant I could pretty much wear whatever I wanted. Maxi dresses and light cardigans, don’t pinch me… I’m not done dreaming!
I’m so happy to be home, even though when I stepped off the plane in Chicago it was a chilly 32 degrees. I missed you too Chi Town. Yesterday the temperature was up to 66 degrees, and the sun was out for a brief period of time. Now as I look out my window I see rain showering the city as lightning strikes in the distance.
Rain, sleet, snow, or shine.. (lets wish for no more snow) I can’t wait to bring more spring inspired outfits to the blog. Click “Read More” below and scroll down for more pictures from my trip and pictures of my cat… because everyone loves cat pictures.
