PLUS SIZE SWIMSUITS FROM TARGET

Petite and plus size fashion blogger Natalie in the city shares her favorite target bikinis and one pieces and talks about body confidence.

I am no stranger to wearing a bikini out in public, heck, I have even worn one on national TV once. However, I have always dreaded shopping for plus size swimwear for women. And if we are being completely honest here, a little tinge of anxiety comes over me as I debut my bikini body for the first time every year. I have always been confident when it comes to showing off my curvy body, but even for the most confident of girls, there are insecurities that still follow.

Did you know one out of three women would miss out on a beach vacation just to avoid wearing a swimsuit? If Justin Timberlake invited them to a party, almost 40% of women would turn him down flat because they don’t feel like their bodies are “swimsuit ready.” The fear of missing out (FOMO) is real for so many women, according to these statistics gathered by Target, and I can relate.

But for the first time, I am throwing plus size modest swimwear into my swimsuit rotation, posing in a two piece plus size swimsuit on my blog, and trying different styles of swimwear because I want to show women that they can push their own limits when it comes to their swimwear choice, as well as their fears and body insecurities, too!

Although I prefer to wear two-piece bikinis—no matter what anyone thinks—this plus size swimsuit changed my mind. The mesh allows my skin to peek through, making me feel sexy and confident.

Wearing a bikini makes me feel like I am conquering my insecurities and helping to inspire other women to do the same. I love taking styles that are colorful and flattering and making them my own. For a fun and playful look, I mixed and matched this Mossimo foldover hipster bikini bottom with a mint-colored Mossimo crochet flounce bandeau bikini top.

Since I am on a streak for trying something new and pushing my comfort zones, I decided to pair this Ava &Viv plus size high waist swim bottom with a Mossimo crochet high neck halter bikini top. I have never tried a look like this out of pure fear of wacky tan lines, but I have totally fallen for this look and I’m making this my go-to look for beach days.

Solid-colored clothing that can stay in my closet for multiple seasons are key. I love being able to grab pieces like this black chiffon midi dress and pair it with everything to create endless outfit possibilities.

This dress, in particular, is great for both a night out and an office look—aside from being an every day piece. To transform this piece into office appropriate attire, I pair the dress with a black pencil skirt and racerback tank top, or a black dress. To take this dress out for a night on the town, I tie a chiffon belt in a bow just a little under my bust and pull the dress to make it shorter and give my figure more shape. I am no stranger to midi-length dresses that have slits on both sides. Similar to this dress, I have a halter slit dress that is perfect for summer.

For this casual, everyday look that I am currently wearing, I slipped into a Vince Camuto midi pencil skirt to give a peek of contrast, topped off with a gold necklace and charm bracelet. These taupe ankle booties also go so well with everything because, of course, they are classic and nuetral, too.

Skirts that flare out toward the bottom and cinch at the waist usually never work for my figure. However, during a business trip back in November, I found this pleated leather midi skirt at a boutique in St. Petersburg, Florida. I thought I would try it on to entertain myself, but then, I fell in love with sleek look it gave my figure.

However, the showstopper of this outfit isn’t my skirt, but this beautiful, burgundy, striped, long sleeve, crop top—try saying that five times fast. This outfit was actually recommended by my boyfriend. Yes, the same one you read about in my last post who did not like my plus size cape dress. While we certainly can’t agree on everything, most girls could never rely on their boyfriends for fashion advice, but mine can’t wait to chime in—good or bad.

My last touching point of this post is my hair! I have been working to achieve a look that I am not even quite sure what the end result looks like—it changes every month—but I knew I had to find a one-of-a-kind hairstylist here in the city. Anastasia Amico styles at Mane Space in Chicago’s Loop. She definitely took my hair from blah to shiny and colorful. Thanks, Anastasia!

MY BOYFRIEND DOESN’T LIKE MY CAPE DRESS

Men and women, we’re from different worlds, OBV. So it’s inevitable that my boyfriend will not always agree with my fashion choices, nor is he going to like every trend I become obsessed with. Heck, he won’t be the only one!

Before I get into the story behind the title of this post, can I just say that I love the cape trends that have gained footing over the past year? I loved the cape outterwear that was sported last winter, and I find the cape dress extremely elegant and chic. This dress in particular isn’t just your average LBD, it has a cape, which makes it all the more special in my eyes.

I threw on this dress with excitement as soon as I got it. Thinking that my boyfriend would praise me for my bold choice, I couldn’t wait to show him. Just as soon as I put it on, I could tell by the look on his face—which went from anticipation to confusion in less than a second—that he would not be looking forward to seeing this dress any time soon.

I couldn’t wait to wear it. However, the truth is, I let his opinion sway the way I felt about the dress, as today was the first time I had worn it out since I bought it three weeks ago. Although it’s not his favorite piece of clothing that I own, he still ventured out with me to take these photos and support my fashion decision.

Not everyone is going to agree with your life or style choices, which is why you have to do and wear what makes you the happiest. So before we left our apartment, I grabbed these Quay sunglasses—which he also said were a “little strange”—I swished my cape and joked with him, “Don’t you love superheros?”

P.S. I still love him, and the dress.

JOJO RINGS: #KEYSFORCHANGE

JoJo rings, jordan dudden, natalie craig, natalie in the city, new york, blogger, fashion blogger, plus size fashion, keys for change, key rings, unique rings, etsy rings, eff your beauty standards, confidence
Just like no two keys are the same, neither are we. As a blogger trying to change the way we see beauty and conform to societal beauty ideals, I embrace my differences to inspire other women to do the same. This is why I especially love the mission behind JoJo Rings
JoJo Rings, LLC is a central New York-based company that produces and sells handcrafted, one-of-a-kind rings from 100% recycled keys. Founded with three pillars in mind: sustainability, social good, and individuality, the company goes by the tag line “Keys for Change,” to reflect their commitment to social good by making a contribution to local nonprofits with each sale.
Because of the company’s manufacturing process and use of recycled materials, no two JoJo Rings are identical. JoJo Rings are simply a celebration of individual style. “We believe that you deserve one-of-a-kind jewelry because you, yourself, are one-of-a-kind,” Jordan Dudden, the brand’s founder, told me in an email.
When people realize that my unique looking rings are simply keys wrapped around my finger, they can’t believe it. Rings have become an accessory that I try to work into my every day look, and I love how I can wear these rings with everything and that no one else in the world has one like mine.
Honor your uniqueness and order a JoJo Ringfor yourself or someone close to you and join the #KeysForChange movement. Also, you can learn all about how Jordan came up with the idea for JoJo Rings in the video at the bottom of this post!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a fun and glamorous New Years Eve and are getting this year off to a good start so far! Although I haven’t made many resolutions for 2016, I have decided to do things a little differently this year with my day-to-day style and the outfits I post on Natalie in the City.
As a plus size woman, it’s difficult to keep up with the latest trends, all the while finding clothes that actually fit. However, I want to push the boundaries of my outfits as much as possible and make whatever I have in my closet work in ways I never thought it could. Whether that means challenging the norms and rules of what plus size women “can/should” wear or simply challenging myself to dress to the nines every single day—lord be with me—I want to take my style and love for fashion more seriously.
Beginning with this outfit: The monochromatic look (January 1, 2016)
After a night of ringing in the new year with my boyfriend on a yacht cruise overlooking the Chicago skyline, my best friend wanted to grab brunch the next morning. Considering that I was not only dancing and partying all night in heels and then walking through the city to catch a cab at nearly 2:00 a.m. after our yacht docked, I should have just thrown my hair up in a bun and put some leggings and UGG boots on. However, I decided to muster up the energy—pre-coffee—to put together this cute little ensemble. This sweater dress is so cozy, without being too bulky, and definitely looks great on my figure. I paired the dress with this dark grey cardigan and a pair of knee-high grey boots, topping the look off with a street level tote

I never really knew how much the feeling of the holidays meant to me. I mean, what’s not to love? There are endless days of shopping, everyone is in a cheerful mood, the weather—this year—is mild and just chilly enough, and there are family and friend gatherings usually paired with too many glasses of wine and stories that can be shared forever.
My Christmas was a little different from all of the rest, as this was my first Christmas without my family. I decided to spend this holiday season in my tiny apartment in Chicago with my boyfriend and his family, which gave me a new appreciation for the holiday season.
But onto the fashion of it all. This scarf reminds me of Christmas, which is why I am not letting go of it anytime soon. Now that the holidays are over, I refuse to transition into letting winter blues—set on by “Chi-beria” storms from January until early April—to get the best of me.
Not only is this red and blue fringe scarf one of my favorite things in my closet right now, but these taupe ankle boots, and knit sweater with a button down back are also some of the things I am currently wearing the most. I have never seen a sweater with a button down back like this one, which drew me to this piece. I have been seeing ankle boots similar to this pair with the brown accent strap around the cuff every where, but way out of my price range. So I scored these booties at T.J. Maxx, story of my life.

AN ADDITION ELLE HOLIDAY

I love the excitement of picking out what to wear for Christmas and New Years Eve. However, this year, I was gifted with a little surprise from Addition Elle that would make my outfit decisions a lot easier, and even more festive. If you aren’t familiar with Addition Elle, you should be! Not only is the brand’s motto “believe in fashion democracy,” but the plus size clothing brand has worked with fashion blogger Nadia Aboulhosn (my blogging idol) as well as plus size supermodel Ashley Graham
Before I go on and on about how much I love Nadia, Ashley, and Addition Elle, let’s get back to these adorable dresses! The dress I chose for my Christmas festivities is the New Noir Lace and Mesh Fit and Flare Dress, which is playful and girly, but also really sophisticated and classic. The dress hugs my hips and flares out toward the bottom, accentuating my curves. My dress for New Years Eve is the New Noir Metallic Sleeveless dress. In my opinion, every New Years Eve ensemble should shine, which is why I absolutely love the way this dress sparkles with every move I make.
Check out my two looks for the holidays below! Which dress is your favorite from Addition Elle’s holiday dresses line? You can also see some of the other holiday inspired dresses from Addition Elle at the bottom of this post. Happy Holidays!

ROCK FAUX FUR

Do you ever see a faux fur coat or vest while shopping and think you have to have it? Well, I know I do, but when I throw on the accessory, it never really turns out the way I expected.

I saw a similar faux fur vest like the one I’m wearing on another blogger a couple weeks ago. That’s when I realized that I had a faux fur vest in my closet that had not yet seen the light of day. I was inspired by the blogger and decided to create a similar all black look to accompany the poofy vest I couldn’t wait to get home and rip out of the closet, which is what usually happens when fashion inspo takes over.

While I’m not totally satisfied with the ensemble I put together, I did learn a few things about being able to pull of the faux fur look. Peep the lessons below:

  • If your faux fur piece is busy in pattern, keep the rest of your outfit all one color, color-blocked, or very minimalist. This will help you not look like Cruella de Ville as you walk down the streets—I think…
  • All black ensembles pair very well with lighter furs and lighter colored outfits pair better with dark colored furs. However, if you are a rebel and you insist on switching up the above declaration, I won’t stand in your way!
  • For my curvy ladies: Fur will always look bulky on us, there is no way around it. So, embrace it! Side note: If you are short and curvy, like me, top your ensemble off with some heels or wedge booties…I wish I would have worn a pair of shoes with a couple of extra inches for this outfit shoot.
  • People may look at you funny. They are probably envying you for being able to step out in the edgy, yet glamorous winter staple…..Believe it or not, fur is harder to pull of than you may think. Try it!
  • Above all else, just own it. You can sport, rock, and wear anything you feel / demonstrate confident in.

I usually shy away from longer dresses and skirts because I’m only five feet tall and rarely wear heels to compensate. However, I decided to push my “self-made” boundaries out of the way for this burgundy cardigan. The slits on the cardigan break up the silhouette, allowing my pleated tulle midi dress to peak through, and the best part: The deep and rich colors actually complement my figure.
The black slip of the dress under the pleated tulle hugs my curves, which gives me a great look even with the flow of the dress. What do you pair with a duster / maxi cardigan? I need some inspiration!
Oh and I know it may be a little heard to make out the detail on one of my gold necklaces below, but the smaller rectangular piece has the Chicago coordinates on them. The necklace is from Love EmilyD, and it’s the sweetest thing. I also included a coordinate necklace below that you can customize with your favorite town!

LIFE UPDATE: FROM A NEW JOB TO WRITING A BOOK

Disclaimer: This is a freakin’ long post, sorry. But so many amazing things are happening. If you want to skip through my life update, scroll down to the bottom. I sort of buried some exciting news down there!

If you follow me on Instagram, You may have noticed that my feed has been boasting beaches and palm trees for the past couple of days. So let me explain: Right now, I am flying back to Chicago from a business trip I had this week in St. Petersburg, Florida.
After walking down Beach Drive in St. Petersburg last night, I had to stop by a local cafe to get some gelato—it was the talk of the town—and reflect on the past couple of days. I sat on the edge of a fountain in a dimly lit garden and began to think about how I could have never imagined being in Florida, learning about an entirely new industry to me, and meeting my coworkers over open bars, virtual realities, panel discussions, and close call collisions with drones flying around the Vinoy Renaissance’s Grand Ballroom. This will all make sense as I tell you more about the company I’ll be working with below, don’t worry!

This trip was probably the most unexpected thing to happen to me this month other than landing a new job with a media group here in Chicago. Monday was my first day at the company, and instead of hopping on the 146 bus around 8:30 a.m. to the River North office, I got in a cab to O’Hare International Airport and onto a flight to Atlanta, connecting to a second flight to Tampa. As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I walked into a room full of hundreds of people—whom I assume had their first day in the industry years and years ago.
“It’s your first day? Wow, they are really just throwing you in with the sharks.”
I got a three-day crash course in packaging, and the latest innovations in the manufacturing industry. I’m now the associate editor for the media group’s newest print and digital publication.
As some of you remember, the last life update I posted was in May, a week after graduation and a couple of days into my then new job at Advertising Age Magazine. After my work at that magazine was complete, I went on to build and manage an editorial department for a local tech startup, which was really cool. Now, I will be writing my way through the business-to-business journalism world, and I can’t wait.
But that’s not all. Last week, I finished writing a blogging guide book for those of you who want to start a blog, but don’t exactly know where to start. I will be sending out free PDF versions of the book to those who sign up here: Are You Ready to Start a Blog?

how to start a blog, blogging guide, how do I start a blog, natalie in the city, natalie craig, chicago, being a blogger, successful blog, how to monetize my blog, fashion blogger
I will also be sharing blogging tips, strategies, and advice directly on my blog in posts. These posts will tell you how to make money blogging, work with brands, learn SEO optimization, and other tips for bloggers looking to take their blog to the next level!
