A year ago, I vowed to try new things when it comes to fashion. You see, I am very much a creature of habit with my wardrobe. If you glided your fingers along the clothes in my closet last year, you’d feel many different textures and fabrics, but you’d see only one color: black. However, when I started boldly sporting bright florals and neon hues, you, my readers, went absolutely crazy! The people I was meeting out on the streets were saying, “Girl! You should wear more color, take more chances, try that daring cut!” And so, I decided that was what I had to do. But my embracing of color transcended beyond just adding more vibrancy to my wardrobe and before I knew it, I was wearing clothes that went against every rule I had previously made for myself.

And this look, which I found in Gordmans’ plus size department, is a prime example of my newfound carefree and open-minded approach to fashion. I first started shopping at Gordmans when I lived in Idaho, and when I moved to Chicago, I was happy to learn that there are a couple of store locations just outside of the city! Find the nearest Gordmans to you here: Find my Gordmans! My favorite thing about the store isn’t just that they get new merchandise every week, but I also love that they have a huge plus size department. I’ve seriously never seen a bigger plus size section in a store that wasn’t solely selling plus sizes. So, shout out to Gordmans for that! Shall we get onto this rule-breaking look?

Broken rule #1: Don’t EVER show your stomach
It’s no secret, plus size women have always been told that they should cover their stomach. And while I’ve never agreed with that rule, I have always felt self-conscious about my tummy. So, I’m freeing the tummy with this look, and I’m loving it! I took this gorgeous Angie cold shoulder blouse and knotted it at the front to show off my midriff. You could also wear this top tucked in or bloused out. Y’all know I love a versatile look!

Broken rule #2: Plus size women shouldn’t wear baggy clothes—they aren’t flattering!I have to admit, I applied this rule to my wardrobe up until I tried on these gorgeous Angie pants. I always felt like baggy clothes—especially pants—really covered up my body and made me look heavier than I was. But I decided to take a walk on the wild side and embrace these bohemian-style pants. I never thought I could pull off a bohemian look, but I feel like this outfit totally put me into a new style category, and in perfect timing for summer!

I topped off the look with a dainty gold necklace and Kensie sandals, both of which I also scored from Gordmans! This entire look cost me less than $50! Can you believe it?

Gordmans told me that because they want to offer their shoppers the lowest possible prices on merchandise, they watch their competitors’ prices and adjust their prices to beat them. But, with their huge assortment of merchandise, sometimes they don’t catch every item. If you find a lower price somewhere else on any item you found at Gordmans, they will match the competitors’ price and they will give you a $5 Gordmans gift card! All you have to do is show the competitor’s current ad, website or a receipt featuring an identical item. Learn more about Gordmans’ Lowest Price Guarantee (http://www.gordmans.com/guarantee) program! It’s pretty cool—especially if you shop on a budget like me!

You’ll find some of your favorite brands and trends at Gordmans just like I did with this look, but if you are planning a shopping trip, make sure to invite me… because I can’t stay away!

Thank you to Gordmans for sponsoring this post. I am a huge proponent of brands that promote inclusivity and sell high-quality, well-fitting clothing. All opinions expressed in this post are 110% my own! Thank you for continuing to support the brands that make Natalie in the City a possibility!

My photographer and I went out to jog in the park and test out my new Parfait sports bra for plus size women I feel like most sports bras try to make you look super sexy, while claiming to be a high-performance garment, which means your breasts are spilling out of your top, and bouncing everywhere during an intense workout or run. However, I’m happy to report that this Parfait Lingerie plus size sports bra prioritizes high-performance practicality and comfort over aesthetic, which made me feel confident. But while I had a bomb bra on, I couldn’t help but wonder what the people walking by me thought about my body.

A fat girl, in a sports bra and short shorts. It’s a sight. And maybe not one that people are used to.

Growing up, I was always the biggest girl on all of my sports teams, but I still stuck every stunt, scored goals, and ran bases, just like everyone else. I guess I had always subconsciously felt inferior or like I wasn’t as good of an athlete as everyone else because of my size, but I never really consciously thought about it. I played every sport from hockey to cheerleading and softball to basketball. My body never held me back.

But a few years ago, some insecurities about my body and what it could and couldn’t do didn’t hit me. My friends—both of them under a size 6—invited me to workout with them in an hour-long strength and conditioning class they both had been complaining about being “so hard.” I shuttered, and feared that I wouldn’t be able to hang in the class with everyone else. I turned them down for weeks out of embarrassment and fear, until one day, something inside me said, “Just go. You’ve got this. Your body has got this.” So I went to the class, and I was so nervous. There wasn’t a single girl who had a body like mine in the class, and the girls next to me were talking about how difficult the class was. I WAS STRESSING. But again, I reassured myself as the workout began. We were more than half way through the class, and I was still going strong. A thin girl who was behind me sat down on her mat and quit the workout in the last 15 minutes. It was then that I realized that the size and the shape of my body didn’t matter. I was just as capable of participating in this workout as women who were two times smaller than me.

Since I’ve come to this realization, I have applied the new found knowledge to every aspect of my life. My body is strong, and it can do whatever I want it to do. But even though I know it, so many people judge fat bodies and they, too, don’t think these bodies are capable of running a marathon, sticking it out in a high intensity interval class, or practicing yoga. And while it’s not my responsibility to convince anyone that my body is worthy, I will lead by example and continue to embrace my curves and wear the short shorts or the sports bra. And just maybe, that bold action will provoke thought, and change the mindset of those who think our bodies aren’t capable.

I just joined a volleyball league this summer, and I confidently take the court every week—usually as the biggest girl on either team. And whenever I have a blip of insecurity or I feel voices creeping in telling me that I’m not good or that I can’t do this, I push myself and prove that I can.

Whatever it is that you want to accomplish this summer, you can do it! I believe in you!

I posted a couple of pictures of me wearing this Military Button Detail Duster Coat on my Instagram stories last week, and y’all went crazy for it! So I’m here to finally share the details with you! I scored this number—and the sexy Black Cold Shoulder Ring Detail Blazer Dress underneath—from Pretty Little Thing. Luckily, temperatures were in the 60’s in Chicago last week, so I got to wear this coat a couple of times. While it may be one of my fave pieces, it may have to sit in my closet for a couple of months until fall comes around—and I’ve already made up my mind: I’ll be LIVING in this coat come cooler months.

I didn’t show off the entire dress in this photo, but it actually has a cold shoulder detail, which is an automatic love for me. I have no idea why, but I love showing off my shoulders. This dress has since sold out from Pretty Little Thing, understandably. But I found the same exact dress from Boohoo: Plus Darcy Crepe Cold Shoulder Dress. I have also included some similar dresses for you to look through in the shop widget below!  ASOS’ Color Block Blazer Dress with Belt is SO cool, and totally reminds me of the one I am wearing.

Also: Excuse the mess that is my hair! It was raining that day and super humid! UGH! I guess I can’t have a good hair day and outfit all at once. *shrugs*

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in both the Black Cold Shoulder Ring Detail Blazer Dress and the Military Button Detail Duster Coat, which is my usual size, and both garments fit perfectly!

A Cinderella Moment

I remember missing out on prom and homecoming in high school because I couldn’t find a dress that fit me well and actually looked good on my body. All the gorgeous gowns of my dreams were made for tiny girls, and my size was never among the racks and racks of dresses my friends and I searched through. But I did end up going to prom once. I’ll never forget driving from dress store to dress store, bridal shop to bridal shop searching for my size—and I was only a size 12/XL back then. As I walked into yet another dress store, I told myself, “If it’s not here, I’m not going.” As expected, I had no luck. I walked out of the store with a hopeless look on my face when I couldn’t find my size. But then, a seamstress ran up to me and said, “Wait. I have something for you in the back that might work.” I spent what felt like an hour standing on a box as this tiny seamstress ran around me in circles, pinning the dress here and there. But finally, when she was done, I looked majestic. And because of her patience and kindness, I actually went to prom. But let’s fast forward to today, shall we? It doesn’t matter what event or gala I get invited to, I know I can go and shop for a stunning gown that will hug every curve and turn every head. That’s because the fashion industry, as a whole, has come along way when it comes to catering to the plus size woman and offering extended sizes.
This gorgeous Betsy & Adam Plus Size Soutache Godet Gown is from Macy’s. It’ caught my eye with it’s nude slip and black embroidery. You see, I’m a simple girl—well kind of—I don’t need the dramatic train or bedazzled bust that comes standard on gowns for women my age. I really just want a mono-colored dress or a two tone gown with details that flatter my figure and trace my curves. And this gown does just that. The mermaid bottom also makes me feel elegant and Cinderella-like. And what woman doesn’t want to feel that way? Whether you’ve been reading my blog for a while or you are just three posts in, you’ve probably realized that I have a relationship with the clothes I wear. These clothes are more than just garments to me. They are my shield against insecurities, and they put whole lot more than just a pep in my step. I have used clothes and fashion to express myself and build up my self esteem since I can remember—even when my size wasn’t on the rack. My relationship and dependence on clothes was the reason I started in Natalie in the City, and mostly because I wanted to share the stories that have brought me to where I am now in life, with the hopes that it would inspire you. And believe it or not, fashion—the good, the bad, and the ugly—had everything to do with the way my journey panned out—and still continues. And sometimes all I need is to slip on a fabulous, curve hugging dress like this one to remind myself of why I’m here, how I got here, and where I need to go next.
Shine on!
SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18W, which is one size larger than my usual size. I wasn’t sure how much stretch this gown would have, which is why I sized up, but I could have totally stuck with a 16W, as this gown is a little loose. I’m 5’2, and as you can see the dress is a little long on me, but I could walk and function in it without tripping!

I’m always looking for an edgy dress that I can wear to a formal event, and I feel like my search might be over. It’s a given that I have to dress to impress when I attend a blogging event. But even when I have a work function, I want to look professional while incorporating my individual style into the look.

And this Victoria dress from SIKA Collection’s Spring/Summer 2018 line, masters that mix between me and formal wear. I absolutely love the details in this dress from the wrap to the cold shoulder and the tassels around the waist. All of these features make this little black dress so intricate and unique. This dress retails for about $250, which is pretty expensive for my budget. Mindy from Mindy City Beauty let me borrow this gorgeous dress, so shout out to her! So I have included some more budget-friendly dresses for you to shop in the widget below!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in this Victoria dress, which is my usual size, but it runs a little large. I could totally fit into a size 16.

Sharing My Hair Secrets

Finding a good hairstylist that you can trust can be harder than finding a soul mate. And when you do finally find that hairstylist, aren’t they actually like a soul mate? I’m being serious! My hair is one of the only things I have ALWAYS, CONSISTENTLY loved about myself, which is why I take finding a stylist so seriously. I found Anastasia Kim in the fall of 2015 while I was on a quest to find the best hairstylist in Chicago. I was scrolling through hashtags on Instagram when her rainbow-colored and perfectly-balayaged feed caught my eye. “OK,” I thought to myself, “This girl can do my hair.”

Fast forward three years later, and not only is Anastasia making major moves and creating new styles, but shes joined forces with Antoinette Avila—SIDE NOTE: Antoinette is a fabulous plus size diva just like us! Together, Anastasia and Antoinette are the dream team of hair and makeup! Don’t believe me? Scroll down for the before and after photos, hunny! And some of you are probably wondering, “But can she handle my type of hair?” YES. Anastasia majored in trichology (the science and study of hair structure), which means she understands what all ethnicities need when it comes to hair cuts, coloring, and treatments.

After with Antoinette!

I get so many emails, comments, and questions about my hair regimen, and how I got my hair so blonde and perfectly balayaged. Well, in short, the answer is Anastasia. But I have teamed up with Anastasia and Antoinette to get answers to all of your burning hair questions like, “How fast can I go full blonde?” and “What’s the truth? Does trimming my hair more often make it grow faster?”

Natalie: When a client comes to you with their hair goals and inspiration, how do you approach their vision and get them to trust you?
Anastasia: One word, “COMMUNICATION.” I believe it is a constant process of working together to create an understanding. I am upfront and honest about what is possible in a single session and I’m also transparent about what the journey looks like moving forward. I will not over-promise and under-deliver because we thoroughly discuss the shade and style of color we are going for. Inspiration photos truly help me understand what a client is looking for, but I also want to recommend my professional opinion. At the end of the day, I am here to serve my clients and therefore delivering their hair goals! A positive attitude and upfront honesty go really far in building trust in a stylist-client relationship.

Natalie: When you go to get your hair done, should you arrive to the salon with dirty hair or freshly washed hair? I’ve heard dirty….am I right?
Antoinette: Clean hair is the best because the color doesn’t have to break through the dirt and oil. Having clean hair before a color can give you an even result. The formulas for chemical services are not as harsh as they were in the past, so while this may have been true long ago, it’s not anymore!

Natalie: What are some common hair myths you ladies hear a lot, and what’s the truth?
Anastasia: Trims make hair grow longer and faster. In reality, it makes hair grow more healthy. This is because the split ends are dusted from the bottom ensuring smooth cuticle all the way up the strand. Think of rope fraying. When it frays from the bottom, it unravels all the way up. The same goes for hair. It frays at the bottom and then splits all the way up making the hair brittle and frizzy. Another is that keratins damage the hair. The new formulas by John Amico (what I use) are formaldehyde-free and healthy for the hair! They come in three strengths: orange, smoothie, and chocolate—depending on the needs a client’s hair type. It is completely safe with hair color and improves the overall shine, health, vibrancy, and strength of the hair!

Natalie: What is your advice for women or men who want to go full blonde, like me?
Anastasia: Get ready for a journey. The best way to achieve your perfect shade of blonde is to visit for multiple sessions. This maintains the integrity of your hair and overall health. Every four to six weeks, you should visit for a toning session and use purple shampoo regularly at home!
Antoinette: Being patient is key!

Natalie: Okay! Fair enough, but what about those who want rainbow hair?
Anastasia: Rainbow hair is HIGH MAINTENANCE! These colors are almost always semi-permanent and therefore fade with each hair wash. Every four to six weeks a color re-boost is necessary.

Natalie: What are some tips you have for maintaining healthy hair?
Anastasia: Regular treatments are vital. Once a week, I recommend Biominoil by John Amico. It comes in a glass vile and does complete wonders for the hair by restoring the pH and depositing the minerals the hair is composed of. Over time, washing, weather, and abuse to the hair can cause brittle ends and damage. Treatments actually restore hair to it’s natural state. Another is never sleep on wet hair. Hair is most fragile when wet and will break from friction on a pillow. For more tips come check me out at the salon! I have so many more to share!
Antoinette: Make sure to use a heat protector on your hair with all hot tools! For our blondes, use wear a silk scarf while you sleep or a silk pillow case and keep up with regular trims!

Natalie: Since it’s summertime, do we need to protect our hair in the sun? If so, how?
Antoinette: When you are out in the sun, it’s crucial for you to protect your hair from UV rays. The sun can fade your color quickly. I recommend applying the Bio Complex Eleven Fluid from John Amico before hitting the beach!

Natalie: How does your pricing range?
Anastasia: My rates are fully dependent on length, density, hair goal desired, processes needed and the state of hair a client comes into the salon with (visit anastasiakim.com for starting prices and service details).

Natalie: Do you have any exciting events or news coming up around the salon?
Anastasia: We are constantly growing as a team at Mane Space Salon Loft. We are progressive group of licensed stylists who have individual goals, as well as a collective vision. There are various stylist educational events coming up at Row 21 in the South Loop featuring several top Chicago hairstylists. Also, in 2019, I will be traveling every month to different salons across the country to educate other stylists on my techniques and color formulas.

Another day, another sexy dress! The first time I wore this dress out, I felt like a goddess. The faux leather material and the ruching detail made my curves pop, and gave me the ultimate confidence boost. I WAS UNTOUCHABLE. But when I saw these photos for the first time, I’ll be honest, my opinion of the dress completely changed. Why though? Was it the lighting? The way I was posed? Either way, it didn’t matter. You ever take a picture of yourself and love it, but when someone else takes a photo of you, you can’t believe what you are seeing? Happens all the time. And maybe that’s just how I feel about this dress.

I wore this dress (minus the kimono) out to the club one night, and I swear it was the baddest look I’ve ever owned. So maybe I will stick to wearing out at night—lol. I got this Hit List Leather Dress from Fashion Nova Curve, and I decided to add in this On The Block Kimono to the look, which has since sold out (here is something similar: Pinstripe Duster Cardigan) The ruching detail on this dress makes the garment hug every curve just right, and I feel super sexy in this look. I am dubbing this dress the perfect outfit for all of my nighttime summer adventures! Do you love a form fitting dress? I actually prefer it as opposed to a looser look because I feel much more confident when my curves are front and center! Ya know?

Plus Size Dresses

I’m Not a Floral Girl, But…

I might make an exception for this plus size floral dress, though. I got the dress in my Dia & Co. box a couple of months ago, and it stopped me dead in my tracks—not in a good way. I almost never wear a girly, traditional floral print, so I was a little confused as to why this ended up in my box. I happened to be live streaming my unboxing on Dia & Co.’s  Facebook page, and I don’t think I hid the fact that I was disappointed. Immediately, viewers were commenting, “Try it on!” So, I did. And honestly, I was quite surprised. Although the pattern wasn’t me, I couldn’t deny how well the dress fit me and how it accentuated my curves.

With that being said, I gave it a shot. And the people in my life—especially my boyfriend—love the breath of fresh air this dress brings to my dark, monochromatic wardrobe. I’ll admit, I feel really girly, fun, and beautiful in the dress, and I may be more open-minded about sporting floral prints in the near future. But shall we get onto the details? Like I said, I found this plus size dress in one of my Dia & Co. boxes—you can learn more about Dia & Co. here: NOT A DRILL: I’M WEARING A TUTU. This Jude Flare Sleeve Floral Dress is actually from Collection by Bobeau’s B Curvy plus size line. Another detail that I really love is the flowiness and shape that the bell sleeves bring to the dress. I could definitely see myself wearing this dress to a summer wedding, brunch, a casual day out, or a nice dinner. Here’s to trying to incorporate more florals into my wardrobe this summer! If you’re a floral dress kind of gal, and you happen to love the way this Collection by Bobeau dress looks, check out other floral dresses from that brand in the shop widget below!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 1X in this dress, which is one size smaller than my usual size, and it fits perfectly. I have never tried any other articles of clothing from Collection by Bobeau, so I’m not sure if the entire plus size line runs large or not.

Out of all of the garments that I have ever posted on this blog, this might be my favorite one ever. Yeah, I said it. What’s not to love about this dress? The sleeves are so fun. The color is vibrant and head turning—and it happens to be my fave color of the season. The ribbed material hugs my curves so nicely. And lastly, the short fit makes me feel super sexy. I feel like every girl needs a dress in her closet that makes her feel like a bombshell as soon as she puts it on. And I’m adding this one to my bombshell list: LACE-UP SUEDE DRESS | DANGEROUS CURVES AHEAD | TROPICAL GODDESS | FALL HUES

By now, you’re probably like, “OK GIRL BUT WHERE IS THE DRESS FROM.” So let me get to that. I found this Brigid Ruffle Dress on Fashion Nova Curve when I was scanning every single store for a beautiful red dress. If you read this blog post: HOT DAMN, you know that I had my sights set on a red-colored dress that I could feel scorching hot in all summer. This dress wasn’t exactly what I envisioned, but as soon as I saw it, I put it in my cart and never looked back. The sleeves are what got me so excited, but they also make the dress costume-y, which makes it difficult to wear this dress on any given Saturday night out. Or maybe I am just over thinking it, and I should wear the damn dress because life is short and this piece deserves to be seen.

I know this dress is everything, but it’s sold out since I received it. So I have included a couple of similar dresses for you in the shop widget below. You can also sign up for the wait list if Fashion Nova decides to restock it! If it is in stock, and you’re able to score it, be sure to use the code “natinthecity” for 15% off your purchase!

My best friend Jennifer got me this adorable Fujifilm Instamax Mini 9 instant Polaroid camera for Christmas, and I have been using it a lot lately. It’s kind of refreshing to take a photo and have it appear right before your eyes—un-retouched, un-altered, and just perfectly natural. Plus, the camera is super cute, just like this outfit.

I’m wearing the White Tie Front Frill Sleeve Blouse from Pretty Little Thing’s Plus collection, and I paired it with the Nude Frill Hem Midaxi Skirt for a super girly and playful look. I took a couple of selfies and my photographer, Rorie Raimondi, caught it all!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 16 in the Nude Frill Hem Midaxi Skirt, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly! I am wearing a size 16 in the White Tie Front Frill Sleeve Blouse, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly!

Stripes. My go-to, these days. As you probably already know, I’ve been fond of lines lately, and this striped kimono is no exception. For me, stripes add such a bold edge to any look—especially high contrast or black and white stripes.

Take this look for example. Without this In Line Striped Kimono from Fashion Nova Curve, this Heart Sigh Skirt and Top Set would be super basic and boring. The top and skirt are made of a stretchy, thin black material, and they are really comfortable. I could either chill in this set all day or dress it up like I did for this look. You know how I love versatility! While these two pieces go so well together, I love that I can mix and match them with my entire closet. GOOD NEWS: You can get this look for 20% off with the code “natinthecity”! I topped off this look for a day out with my all-time favorite Circular Tote Bag that I scored from Anthropologie. The bag adds a pop of color to the monochromatic look, and I swear, the bag gives any look I pair it with an ultra cool vibe.

Are you sick of the stripes yet? Cause I’m not!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 2X in the Heart Sigh Skirt and Top Set, which is my usual size, and the set fits perfectly. However, the set is a little see through and made of very thin material. I am wearing a size 3X in the In Line Striped Kimono, which is one size larger than my usual size, and it fits perfectly. I sized up because I wanted a looser fit, but the kimono runs a little oversized anyways so I would have been fine with the 2X!

I’ve been seeing athletic wear make a huge jump into mainstream fashion beyond just the athleisure trend of sweatpants with heels or full on tracksuits. These jeans are a perfect example of my observation. I don’t own anything like them, and given the chance a couple of years ago, I may have been like “Ew I would never wear those. Ever.” But here we are, and I’m in love.

When I saw these Luna Side Tape Slim Pants, I was instantly attracted to the pants. Y’all know I love a good destroyed denim look. I found them on Simply Be, and decided to pair them with this adorable blue Eyelet Side Seam Jumper, which is also from Simply Be. The jumper has sold out on the site, but here is something similar: Glamorous Bell Sleeve Lace Up Sweater. This look is playful, sporty, and chic—and the pants are totally on trend. If you love this Simply Be look, you can score it for 50% off with the code SimplyBe54. You’re welcome! I have also curated a bunch of side tape denim in the shop widget below if you want to partake in the trend!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 16 in the Luna Side Tape Slim Pants, which is my usual size, and the pants fit well. I feel like they might be a little baggy on me in the lower leg region, so if I could order them again, I would order a size 14. I am wearing a size 16/18 in the Eyelet Side Seam Jumper, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly.
