Do you ever have moments of doubt where you feel like you may not be able to overcome an obstacle or achieve a dream that’s been near and dear to your heart? Of course you have, because we all do. Ever heard the phrase “You are your own toughest critic?” Well, it’s true, we are all hard on ourselves whether we like to admit it or not. Me, especially. Ever since I can remember, I was consumed with doubt. But as I have gotten older, I realized that I have had to overcome my fears and doubts to reach my goals and dreams. But how? It all starts with gaining confidence.

Easier said then done, right? Well, there is one concrete way that I have been able to channel more confidence no matter what I was doing, and that, is through fashion. Ever since I was a kid, I always looked to clothes to create a fierce exterior shell that made me feel beautiful and strong at school.Have you ever experienced putting on your favorite dress or shoes and just feeling a rush of happiness? That’s exactly what I feel when put together a cute outfit that shows off my curves, accentuates my figure, and reflects my personality—like this one. These Miracle Jean Faith Patchwork jeans from Stage Stores are spunky, but also super chic, and I love that they are a simple jean, but the patches give it a unique touch. You’ll notice that I am wearing this pink Signature Studio Lace Cold Shoulder top not only because it’s my favorite color, but also because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Fashion goes beyond instilling confidence in me, but it’s also a great tool to help you convey a message and show your support.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this year Stage is turning October into Pink October. Throughout the month, Stage will be raising money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through various in-store and online activations. Whether you shop in store or online, you can help Stage give back throughout the month by sharing your moments of strength and inspiration. Here’s how you can get involved:

IN STORE:
You can take part in a variety of events and opportunities at your local Stage store, and anytime you purchase a participating “pink” item, 50% of the purchase price goes to BCRF!
ONLINE:
During the month of October, for every #ipinkican moment (when you share using the hashtag on Instagram and Facebook), Stage will donate $1to support Breast Cancer Research Foundation (up to $25,000).

You can learn more about these opportunities by visiting: Stage.com/IPINKICAN.

It seems like a new subscription box service pops up every month, but I have really been enjoying how much convenience and excitement they bring to my life. Think about it: Clothing subscription boxes give you the opportunity to let someone else make your style choices for you, and they have also helped me step outside of my comfort zone.

The most recent subscription box service I’ve decided to try is Burgundy Fox, a company that curates quality lingerie and sleepwear. I took an in depth style quiz to create my style profile. The quiz asked me about what I liked to sleep in, how adventurous I am with different lingerie styles, and what colors I will and will not wear. I noted that I wanted to be bold and adventurous with the pieces that I got in my box, so I was really eager to get my first box and see what the stylists at Burgundy Fox chose for me.

I couldn’t be more elated. As soon as I unboxed the package, I saw a peek of this beautiful plum, wine color. I love teddies or one piece lingerie because they make me feel super sexy, but they are also easy to lounge in and throw a robe over. Speaking of robe, I also received a matching kimono with this bodysuit. It’s stunning!

Lately, wearing lingerie just because has really instilled more confidence in myself. As soon as I slip a sexy garment on, my whole mood and outlook changes. And when I catch glimpses of myself in the mirror, I blush and pose for a second. It really forces me to appreciate my body, and at the same time, it makes me confront the insecurities that I have. And by acknowledging your insecurities, you empower yourself to change your mindset.

Y’all know that summer isn’t my favorite season, but I must admit: I actually had a great summer. I embraced the styles I love, I found new ways to combat chub rub, and I went all natural with my hair and skin like I pledged to. So while I am excited for fall, I wanted to give summer 2018 a proper send off.

And I figured this Work of Art Dress from Fashion Nova Curve was the perfect way to kiss the season goodbye! Not only is the pattern and coloring of the dress show stopping, but I love the way the dress fits and hugs my curves. I’m obsessed with this dress, and trust me that I will find a way to incorporate it into my fall wardrobe! Trends that were popular in the ’90s are having a huge moment right now, which is another reason I gravitated toward this tube top dress. Do you remember the last time you wore a tube top?

Over the past year, lingerie has become something I turn to when I am not feeling my best. It’s almost like the right bra and panties are magic to me as they can totally change my entire mood. My whole life, I’ve turned to fashion as a way to boost my confidence, and I guess tapping lingerie to put me in a good mood is no different.

But that doesn’t mean that any old bra or pair of panties can do the trick. There are some basic things that each piece of lingerie must have to make me feel my best! Let’s start with this Mariela Unlined Wire Bra and bikini set in the color night shadow from Parfait Lingerie. This set has all of the characteristics I look for in a bikini and bra duo: it has sexy, lace peek-a-boos, the color is gorgeous, and the fit is impeccable. Comfort is another thing that I prioritize because I usually wear these pieces when I am lounging around and need a pick me up. If I ever have a day where I don’t have plans, you can find me snuggled up in some cute, comfortable lingerie and robe binging my fave Netflix show or writing. Because I am usually the only one who sees my lingerie, I opt for subtle sexiness. There is no need for extra frills or anything too crazy. I like to keep it simple, yet gorgeous!

When I share this little life hack of mine, people ask, “Do you really lounge around in lingerie? That’s the last thing I think about wearing when I want to be lazy or comfortable.” And to that, I counter with, “How do you feel when you’ve been wearing baggy sweatpants and a sweatshirt all day?” Unproductive, lazy, dirty, gross…Does that seem familiar? I know that’s exactly how I feel when I lay around in clothes that don’t make me feel any better about myself. So I always tell people to just try it! Find some lingerie that makes you feel sexy and beautiful, and on your next Netflix and chill day, sport lingerie. I be you will notice your mood and presence change drastically!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 44 D, which is one cup size larger than my usual size, and it fits perfectly. I suggest sizing up one cup size for extra comfort and a better fit!

When I wore this skirt last winter, everyone went crazy over it. I got emails about the blog post I featured the skirt in, and all of a sudden, I had people approach me in person to ask me about it. I was baffled! I mean, I knew it was a cute skirt, but I had scooped it up at Gordman’s one day while in Idaho, and I thought to myself, “Eh. It’s $8, if I never wear it, it’s not a huge loss.” But little did I know that I had a little gem on my hands.

I only wear it here and there, but when I do, I definitely feel magic. I am a huge fan of sequins—whether they are in or out. I mentioned that I found the skirt at Gordman’s, but it’s originally from Express. While the skirt has since sold out, I have found many similar ones and placed them in the shop widget below! Now, I don’t usually wear Express because they don’t carry my size in stores, however, they do go up to a size 18 and XL online. I paired the skirt with this Rebel Wilson x Angels Cold Shoulder Sweatshirt and tied it above the waist for a different take. Instead of topping off the look with some heals, I wanted to whip out my favorite faux suede boots that I got from Charlotte Russe last fall, but Brinley Co. carries identical ones, too!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size XL in the Sequin Skirt from Express, which is one size smaller than my usual size, but it fits! I am wearing a size 2X in the Rebel Wilson x Angels Cold Shoulder Sweatshirt, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly!

I feel like I mention my 9-to-5 job on my blog more than I mention how crazy it is that I used to hate rompers and jumpsuits and now it’s all I wear….or my love for stripes. Anyways, I understand that you get the point: Natalie is more than a blogger, she sits in an office for eight hours a day. heh. But as you could imagine, I love to dress up when I head into the office. Sure, when my alarm goes off at 6:00 am, the last thing I want to do is put on anything other than leggings. However, I know that if I don’t put effort into my outfits, I won’t feel my best, and I won’t work as hard as I should. Yeah, fashion plays that big of a role in my life / mood. This is why I love pieces that pack the drama, but are comfortable and easy to piece together into one look.

Let’s talk about this cute Betsey Johnson Plus Size Ruffled-Hem Midi Dress that I got from Macy’s. This is my ideal dress for work fro many reasons: It’s very comfortable, it has fun and unique features like the ruffled-hem and puff sleeves, and the color is powerful and bold. I also got the dress in navy, which seems to be the only color available online. I got so many compliments on the navy dress, and rightfully so. It hugged my curves in all the right places and the ruffled-hem swished everywhere I walked. It was the cutest dress!

What do you like to wear to work?

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 16W in the Betsey Johnson Plus Size Ruffled-Hem Midi Dress that I got from Macy’s, which is my usual size, and the dress fits perfectly. The material is stretchy and comfortable.

I feel like I could seduce an entire room in this dress. It’s silky soft material drapes over every curve and flows with every stride I take. My shoulders peek out, and the fact that this dress ties at the side and is “barely there,” makes me feel dangerously sexy. For me, fashion has always been kind of like drug. I can’t explain the feeling I get when I slip on a garment that makes me feel a rush of confidence. I turned to fashion when I was younger and getting bullied at school every day. I wore clothes as a shield and a shell that would protect me from harsh words—mostly about my curvy, bigger body. Fashion gave me this escape, but it also helped me come to terms with my body, even though clothes didn’t fit me like they fit my peers in middle and high school.

And today, fashion is still more than just a form of expression for me. My outfits set the foundation for my day and the tone for my attitude. And this dress makes me feel strikingly beautiful and powerful. I found the Plus Black Satin Frill Detail Wrap Maxi Dress from PrettyLittleThing and I knew I needed it for the times where I want a sexy black dress, but not a little one. I was a little skeptical when I first got it because the only thing keeping the dress closed was two strings that tie together on the left side of the dress. And you know, satin, is a slippery material. But I must say, The dress held up, and stayed on during a windy day. This is definitely I dress I will be turning to when I need to channel some extra confidence.

Satin wrap dresses are having a moment right now, so I have included my favorite plus size satin wrap dresses in the shop widget below. I hope you find one you love!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 20 in the Plus Black Satin Frill Detail Wrap Maxi Dress, which is one size larger than my usual size, and it fits perfectly. I ordered the dress in a size 18 at first, but it was too small.

Ive been dying to get some more orange into my wardrobe, and I’m not talking about “burnt orange or copper,” I’m talking about bright orange. I ordered this adorable Scallop Edge Crop + Trouser Co-ord from Boohoo at the beginning of summer, but when I tried it on, I looked like I just escaped from prison. Yeah, I guess prison jumpsuits are bright orange, however, I didn’t foresee that the color orange would immediately make me think of jail attire. I didn’t want to give up, though. Orange was the color of the summer, and I knew I could make it work if I found the right fit, hue, and style of clothing.

Then, I landed upon this Orange Frill Hem Midi Skirt from PrettyLittleThing, and it was perfect! I’ve been gravitating toward ruffles this summer, too. I love the feminine and sexy edge it brings to garments, so I have been trying to work more frills into my wardrobe. Now, I wanted to learn from my last mistake of ordering an entirely orange outfit, so I went ahead and paired the skirt with this Stripe Strappy Crop Top, which is also from PrettyLittleThing. I really love this look, and I think it satisfies my craving for the color orange without over doing it. Anyone else craving this hue?

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in both the Orange Frill Hem Midi Skirt and Stripe Strappy Crop Top, which is my usual size, and they both fit perfectly!

Today we are sporting two of my favorite things: stripes and jumpsuits! A couple of years ago, you would have never heard those two words come out of my mouth in a positive way, but you could say I’m more open-minded these days. If you’ve been following along on my journey for the past couple of years, you will have probably noticed that I blossomed from this girl who only wore form-fitting, black clothing to a woman who will try just about anything—and in any color. I’m really glad my style has evolved to be more adventurous, but I am still trying to push my boundaries even more. On days where I am not doing blog things, you could find my style to be a little more reserved and monochromatic, sort of like the old days. However, as fall approaches, I am planning looks for every single day of the week, and I don’t want any boring outfits making the cut.

This look from Fashion Nova Curve is definitely on my fall list as it’s the perfect transitional outfit for the in-between weather us Chicagoans are about to experience. I created this ensemble around this Floristic Journey Kimono because I loved the stripes and the color combination. I wasn’t exactly sure what I would wear under it—because it is so versatile—and after thinking I was going to wear a dress, I zeroed in on this Avalon Jogger Jumpsuit, and determined it was perfect. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the ankles on the jumpsuit and I guess I still don’t know if I love that detail, but I think it works. I was worried about the ankles making me look shorter than I was, but I don’t really see it being that big of an issue! I can’t wait to paid the Floristic Journey Kimono and the Avalon Jogger Jumpsuit with more looks, respectively. Y’all know I love versatile pieces! If you adore this look, you can get it for 15% off with the code “NATCITY” when you shop Fashion Nova!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 3X in the Floristic Journey Kimono, which is one size larger than my usual size, and it fits perfectly. I sized up in the kimono because I wasn’t sure if the arms would be tight or not. I could have ordered a 2X, as I feel that it runs pretty true to size! I am wearing a size 2X in the Avalon Jogger Jumpsuit, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly!

As someone who works a 9-to-5 job, runs a side hustle from 5-to-10, and also incorporates other various activities into her daily life, you would think that I’d be pretty exhausted all the time. People ask me how I find the minutes and hours in a day to handle both a full time job and my blog while being a social butterfly, and my answer has always been, “I don’t know, I just kind of do it.” Hard work and dedication are probably the two things that play into my ability to accomplish everything on my daily to-do lists. But there is one thing I couldn’t make it all happen without: SLEEP. That’s right. For all you nappers out there, this is your time to shine. Hit that snooze button because we are going back to bed—in a Big Fig Mattress, of course!

Let’s get cozy
In all seriousness though, a good night’s sleep positions me to be on my A-game the next day, and when I wake up in the morning, I feel refreshed and ready for whatever the day brings. But it wasn’t always like that. Have you ever rolled out of bed after sleeping for what feels like five minutes and your entire day feels off? You miss the train, spill coffee on your brand new silk blouse, your email inbox is off the chain, and then you have to stay late at work because your to-do list just keeps getting longer and longer? That used to be me two years ago. No matter what time I went to bed, what side I slept on, which essential oils I diffused, I never felt well rested in the morning. I woke up with back and neck pain, and what’s worse: my jaw hurt from clenching it all night because I was stressed out. Imagine not having a good night’s sleep night after night after night. It adds up and takes a horrendous toll on your body, and it could be holding you back from your dreams and goals.

Is there a mattress specifically for plus size bodies?
Like I previously mentioned, it doesn’t matter what sleep sounds you ask Alexa to play at night or which essential oils you diffuse, it really all comes down to the mattress you are sleeping on. When I started mattress shopping, I wasn’t sure which one would work for me. I thought the mattresses that were packaged in a box and expended once you unpackaged them were cool and easy to move up to my apartment, but I soon learned that they weren’t made for my body. Why did I ever think a mattress like that would work for me? As a plus size individual, the “one size fits all” kind of clothing never worked for me, so why would a “one size fits all” mattress give me a great night’s sleep? That’s when I came across Big Fig Mattress, the first mattress built for a bigger figure. Still, I was skeptical, and even as a plus size individual, I didn’t know what a mattress needed to have for it to be perfect for my body type. So I investigated.

What makes a mattress suitable for a bigger figure?
To figure out how was the Big Fig Mattress was going to be different from all of the rest, I had to analyze the problems I was dealing with while sleeping. I narrowed it down to the fact that my old mattress has a lack of support, the materials of the mattress shifted, and it had a weak foundation. And it was only a couple of years old. So when Big Fig told me their mattress would last 20 years or longer, and had that they had the test results to prove it, I was sold. Additionally, the mattress has features like 1600 pocketed coil springs to support the neck and back, three layers of high-density poly foam for no-sag cushioning, and the mattress has been tufted in 16 places to keep the internal materials from shifting. But my favorite feature of the Big Fig Mattress is the ThermoGel quilted top that keeps me cool throughout the night. Lastly, I had the option of ordering a heavy-duty (and virtually indestructible) bed frame made out of recycled railroad steel, which was uniquely made for the Big Fig Mattress.

Sleep like a girl boss
Sure enough, the mattress has immensely changed the way I sleep through the night. I no longer wake up with aches and pains in my neck and back, and I can even spring out of bed at 5:30 a.m., if I need to (I used to hit the snooze button until 7 a.m. and then be late for work). I can’t wait to crawl into bed at night, and I often lay and sit on it while I am working because it’s where I feel most comfortable (Yes, my desk feels neglected). Everyone deserves to sleep throughout the night and wake up feeling refreshed and re-energized, and I truly believe that a good night’s sleep is the foundation that every go-getter needs to hustle their heart out and make their dreams a reality. But you don’t have to take my word for it, you can try out the Big Fig Mattress with a 120 night trial to see if it’s the perfect fit for you, too. And right now, Big Fig is having a HUGE Holiday Sale!

Ever since I opened up to you about joining a volleyball team this summer, you’ve wanted to know what I do to stay active. But not only did you want to know, you wanted to see me in action, too. When I got requests to show more of my active side, I got a little nervous because I’ve never posted workout videos before. However, hearing the positive feedback from you and how it was encouraging you to get out and join a sports team, hit the gym, sign up for a dance class, or take up yoga, really inspired me. So, here I am in Nike shorts and a T-shirt. Okay. Can I go home now?

JUST KIDDING.

If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen that I started posting my workouts with my personal trainer, Quan. You can learn more about Quan here: Train with Quan. And while I had my fears of posting videos of me sweating and pushing my limits, I’ve actually come to love posting my workouts and chatting with you about them! I actually got some of my fave friends and followers to come out and join me for a workout. See our sweaty pics here: Self Care Sundays!

BUT REAL TALK: The discussions we have around being active as a plus size individual are very important. A lot of times, as fat/plus size/curvy/thick women, we hold ourselves back from doing things that we have a passion for—like going to yoga or joining a dance team—because we are afraid of people judging or staring at us. And of course, there is that overwhelming anxiety of getting into a class at the gym and not being able to hold your own, and because you’re fat, people will judge you if you choose to sit the rest of the class out or take a breather. I first started experiencing these anxieties when I went back to hitting the gym regularly about two years ago. My friends always wanted to go to these boutique gym classes, which were, of course, filled with fit, thin girls who do the class three times a week (think SoulCycle). I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to finish the workout because I wasn’t in shape and that people would judge me even more because I was plus size. I felt extremely uncomfortable and out of place. But I went to the class anyways. We were about 30 minutes into the workout when a thin woman next to me sat down on her mat, and took a break from the class because she was tired…and I was still going. And just like that, my anxieties were lifted. I then realized that all of the boundaries and limitations I put on myself were all self-imposed insecurities, and that no one was actually judging me or waiting for me to tap out. Moral of the story: You are probably judging yourself harder than anyone around you. So cut yourself some slack, join that gym, step into a dance class, or learn how to achieve a crow pose in yoga. Or you could be like me and get your ass kicked everyday (actually only on Tuesdays..heh) by Quan. I know it can be hard to take the first leap and try something new or scary, but just think, every time that you own yourself and confidently pursue your goals—whether it’s at the gym, work, or while partaking in a hobby or passion project—you are influential. INFLUENTIAL? Huh? What does that mean? Being a plus size woman, people have the wrong idea about us, and a lot of times, we have the wrong idea about us, too. But when you boldly approach something that scares you, or you hit the gym and crush your workout, you’re proving everyone wrong—even yourself! Just think of all the people you could inspire. So go fourth, and be you. Take the class, join the gym, kick ass on the court, and most importantly, have fun while doing it! If you’re in Chicago, and you need a workout partner…hit me up! My trainer Quan also has workouts open to everyone every week, so be sure to stay tuned on his Instagram for more info on those!

We came here for the look though, right?

Macy’s sent me these new pieces from the Nike Plus line, and I’m stoked! Macy’s carries the latest in plus size fashion, and they also have a variety of on-trend plus size active wear, too! These Nike Plus Size Tempo Dri-FIT Track Shorts, are pretty cute, and how perfectly do they go with this Plus Size Futura Logo T-Shirt? Ugh. My mom is probably reading this saying, “OMG Natalie. This isn’t a fashion show…you’re going to the gym.” And to that I have to say: How many times have we had this conversation about fashion? Look at me now. JK. I love you mom. Anyways, back to the fashion! While I do love the color coordination of this look, the shorts aren’t my favorite just because I feel like depending on the moves I am doing they can be restrictive, and they aren’t that flattering. But I am a big fan of the T-shirt. And to top it all off, I can’t forget about my fave shoes—even outside of the gym—my Nike Tanjun Running Sneaker. I posted a picture on Instagram of me wearing a  Sportswear Gym Vintage Hoodie and the matching pants from Nike, which Macy’s also sent me. What are our thoughts on match match tracksuits? I’m feeling it!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 1X in both the Nike Plus Size Tempo Dri-FIT Track Shorts and the Plus Size Futura Logo T-Shirt, which is one size smaller than my usual size, but the Nike Plus line does run a little big because I would normally order a 2X. These fit me perfectly!

Just imagine being around more than 500 women—who all want to better themselves, launch a business, and empower other women—for 12 straight hours. It’s pretty incredible, and as you could probably guess, I am on an all-time high from attending Create & Cultivate‘s conference this past weekend in Chicago.

I wanted to be sure that I dressed the part since I would be around hundreds of other fashionable and unique girl bosses. So I partnered with JCPenney, a main sponsor behind the conference, and a one-stop shopping destination offering a variety of stylish and affordable fashion and home decor merchandise. Yeah, I said home decor—you should have seen their booth at Create and Cultivate, it was essentially the office of my dreams! (See the photo above!)

JCPenney offers a variety of high-quality, stylish pieces for plus size women at great value. I wore this Worthington Stripe Tie Front Jumpsuit, which is priced at only $34.99. I ordered a size 18w, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly. Y’all know I love a good, versatile jumpsuit, and this one didn’t disappoint. It was so comfortable, and hugged my curves in all the right places. The stripes and the tie waist were subtle details that created a bold look, and I will definitely be making this jumpsuit a consistent part of my wardrobe.

Now, let’s get into some real talk: Earlier in this post, I said I wanted to “dress the part,” and here is why: In crowds, I can feel anxious and I also compare myself to others especially when I am around women in my same industry or line of work. It’s something I really dislike about myself, but I also know that many women experience this same feeling. I recognized that an event like this, I may be susceptible to feeling insecure. But one way that I move through these insecurities is through fashion. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know that I turn to clothes as a way to build confidence and channel power and strength during moments of weakness. So it was critical that I wore an outfit that made me feel powerful, beautiful and confident. As soon as I slipped the Worthington Stripe Tie Front Jumpsuit on, I felt a rush of confidence, and I knew that I was ready to take on this conference like the boss babe I was.

I attended panel discussions and keynote speeches around building an audience, the evolving workforce of tomorrow, shattering the glass ceiling, and fearlessly pursuing your passion. It was refreshing to hear so many women share their career paths and the lessons they learned. But seeing the look on their faces and tone of their voices when they spoke about their passions was truly captivating. The emotions conveyed an experienced that really reinvigorated me to approach both my career and side hustle with gusto.

Here are some of the most memorable takeaways I got from attending Create and Cultivate with JCPenney:
– Regarding compensation at work or on a project you are working on for your side hustle: ALWAYS negotiate. Women are grossly underpaid in the corporate world. Research ways to negotiate and ask for that raise! Make sure you backup your request for a raise with salary statistics for your position in your location, as well as a list of accomplishments you have reached while at your company. When ti comes to pricing a project for your side hustle or sending your rates to a potential client, know your worth! If people approach you with special projects or work, they see value in you. If they say they don’t have the budget, negotiate or respectfully decline the opportunity if it’s not worth it for you to extend your services for free!
– Don’t give up! Everyone faces obstacles, not just entrepreneurs developing a new business or product. Assess your obstacle and determine a way that you can adapt and overcome it. Don’t let it stop you in your tracks. The sooner you figure out a plan of attack, the closer you are to achieving your goal! Never let an obstacle derail you!
– Storytelling is everything! As a society, we are so compelled by the stories of others. When trying to  effectively communicate your message, create a story and share your narrative! People love when they can genuinely relate to others.
– ALWAYS BE YOURSELF, AND MOVE THROUGH LIFE BOLDLY AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY!
