I know I have said this a couple of times this year, but I have really been trying to step outside of my comfort zone when it comes to oversized clothing or garments with extra details—like this fringe cardigan. Typically, I would avoid fur or puffy coats, oversized sweaters, and anything else that would add extra bulk on top of my already curvy figure. I realized that I was missing out on fun pieces by forcing myself to abide by standards and ideals that were fed to me as a young girl. I used to be told, “Don’t wear stripes or don’t wear baggy clothes because they will make you look bigger than you are,” and it literally scared me into following the rule closely, until just this past year. Back then, I didn’t want to look larger than I was, hell, I didn’t even want to be as big as I was. But as I found the fat acceptance movement and body positivity, I learned to accept myself. And the need to accentuate every curve and wear an ‘ultra-slimming’ all black outfit didn’t phase me.

So let’s start off this new year with a more progressive look for me! I found this Abbot Kinney Cardigan II on Fashion Nova Curve, and while I knew there was a slight chance that I would look like a grape-colored Big Bird, I was all in. I paired it with the Burnin’ Bridges Skirt, which is so comfortable and sexy. I absolutely love the material and the zip detail on this. The color is also Devine. Can you tell I was feeling extra burgundy when I ordered this? Heh.

Navy & Stripes

I wore this to work, and I honestly have never felt more like a bad bitch than on that day. Let’s be real, this outfit…isn’t revolutionary, and it may not turn many heads. However, for me, it was a statement. These days, I wear leggings and loose knit sweaters to work…jeans if I somehow wake up on the right side of the bed (rarely). But these Suit Up High Waisted Tuxedo Trousers were form fitting, and boasted a tuxedo stripe and cute ankle details. I guess what I am trying to say is that these pants were doing a lot—compared to what I usually sport. And I really took a chance with this cropped Let’s Hit Snooze Striped Top because I NEVER EVER wear crop tops to work—granted, my tummy wasn’t showing, but still! And that’s the thing, I felt beautiful and adventurous in this look, and I think that really set my attitude for the day. I was unstoppable.

When I first put this look on, my boyfriend (who is quite the fashionisto himself) told me it looked “too matchy-matchy,” but since when do we listen to boys? THANK YOU, NEXT. Nonetheless, I did what I wanted and wore the look. I intentionally ordered these two pieces together wanting to put them into one look. And well, once I make my mind up….what’s done is done.

You can get the top and the pants from Soncy, and you can take $15 off the total price when you use the code: nataliecraigxsoncy !

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 2 in both the Suit Up High Waisted Tuxedo Trousers and the Let’s Hit Snooze Striped Top, which is my usual size and both garments fit perfectly. The pants do not have any stretch in them, but they do fit true to size. If you are worried about them being too tight, I would size up one size!

Chicago Plus Size Petite Fashion Blogger and model Natalie Craig reviews Soncy's Not Your Average Plaid Skirt and The Zip It Up Lightweight Sweater.
I love when a piece of clothing can transform my persona. Take this Not Your Average Plaid Skirt for example, which totally makes me feel like the cool school girl I always wanted to be in college.

I got the whole look from Soncy, which I have recently fallen in love with, but when I saw this skirt I knew it was too good to be true. The pattern was adorable, the tie waist was flawless, and the zipper detail was too cool. However, while the skirt is my size, it was way too tight. I could wear this skirt out and about, but it’s game over as soon as I sit down or bend over. I don’t think the length is to blame for this sizing malfunction, but more so the material. The skirt has no stretch whatsoever. Had it had at least 10% more stretch, it would have been a keeper. The Zip It Up Lightweight Sweater, on the other hand, is a super cool addition to my wardrobe, and I’ve worn it with a couple of different looks. You can get the sweater and the skirt from Soncy, and you can take $15 off the total price when you use the code:nataliecraigxsoncy !

I’m so sad that the skirt didn’t workout, and I wonder if a larger size would work on me, but for some people, ordering a larger size isn’t possible. So for that reason, I won’t be exchanging it. And it’s going to have to collect dust in my closet, or I’ll donate it. If you are a size 14 or 16, and you would like the skirt, you can email me at natinthecity@gmail.com, and I will find a way to get it to you! UPDATE: This skirt has been claimed! XO

Chicago Plus Size Petite Fashion Blogger and model Natalie Craig reviews Fashion Nova Curve's Edges That Scratch Bodysuit and Heart of Gold Midi Skirt. Plus size New Years eve outfits 2019

Every year, I try to create a fun look for New Years Eve that makes me feel sexy, vibrant, and ready to take on the year ahead. And although I am a self-proclaimed fashionista, finding the perfect outfit is always a difficult feat. Living in Chicago, there are so many ways to spend New Years Eve, when in reality, the most practical way is staying home, and sitting by a fire…because it’s freezing. But, that’s never the case. One year, I spent NYE on a yacht in the middle of Lake Michigan in freezing temperatures, last year I went out to the clubs to watch the clock count down, and this year, I’ll be attending a house party.

I figured since my plans are a little more low key, I would still shoot for a fun and sexy look, but something a little glamorous and well suited for a house party. I loved the look of this Edges That Scratch Bodysuit, but it wasn’t sparkly or shiny enough for my usual NYE look. So I paired it with this Heart of Gold Midi Skirt to turn the whole outfit up a couple of notches. I think this has to be the most clothing I’ve ever worn on NYE…so maybe I won’t catch a cold the next day! Woo! If you LOVE this look, you can score it 15% off with the code “NATALIEXCRAIG” at Fashion Nova!

What do you do on NYE? As I mentioned, I usually party it up at a nightclub or friends house, but one things for sure, at the end of the night, I usually end up at McDonalds stuffing my face with chicken nuggets yelling “NEW YEAR, NEW ME!”

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 2X in the  Edges That Scratch Bodysuit, which is my usual size, but the bodysuit is very tight and I wasn’t able to button the bottom of it. I am wearing a size 2X in the Heart of Gold Midi Skirt, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly.

27th Birthday Outfit

chicago petite plus size fashion blogger and model Natalie Craig reviews Marée Pour Toi's washed silk charmeuse blouse and pleather pleated skirt in olive.

This is the outfit I wore on my birthday, and I love it for so many reasons. Unfortunately, I had to work on my birthday, which was a major bummer, but I knew I could make it a great day by wearing a show-stopping outfit. And this get up didn’t sacrifice sexy for a professional look, it harmonized the two to make me feel like the grown up and radiant 27 year old I became that day.

The skirt may look awfully familiar to you, and for a good reason. I have the same Pleather Pleated Skirt in black from Marée Pour Toi! See the post here: THE POCKETS ON THIS BLAZER THO. I first tried Marée Pour Toi, a new plus size brand, this fall, and I instantly fell in love with the fit, quality, and on-trend pieces they offered. So I doubled down and got this Washed Silk Charmeuse Bow Blouse and the Olive Pleather Pleated Skirt. Needless to say, I felt like a goddess all day, as I should on my birthday! I adore the pleats on this skirt as well as the thick insulation on the inside that keeps me warm during chilly Chicago days. I am also rather charmed by the tie neck on this unbelievably soft charmeuse blouse and the sleeve cuffs are also cute and intricate. I topped off the look with some black booties, and slayed the day!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 18 in the Washed Silk Charmeuse Bow Blouse and the Pleather Pleated Skirt , which is my usual size, and the fit is perfect! I highly recommend Marée Pour Toi because everything runs true to size!

I’ll admit, I usually never dress up too much for the holidays, but this year was the first time I’ve truly embraced holiday patterns, trends, and a festive wardrobe. And I’ve actually had a blast doing it.

This look falls right in line with holiday attire, and rightfully so since it’s from Marée Pour Toi‘s holiday collection! The Doleman Shimmer Dress is not only perfect for my Christmas season get togethers, but I could also wear this to a gala, the opera, or any other formal event. I also love this gown because I have nothing like it in my closet. The sleeves that drape over my shoulder and cascade down mixed with the fitted waistline highlight my figure, and make me feel radiant. And you all know how much I love anything that sparkles!

If you haven’t heard of Marée Pour Toi, it made its entry into the plus size fashion world via CurvyCon in New York this past September. You can also learn more about the brand here: FASHION-FORWARD PLUS SIZE WORK WEAR

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel pressure to add a festive touch to every outfit during the holiday season? From red scarves to green plaid, I find little ways to infuse the Christmas spirit into my looks.

I’ve seen a lot of girls rocking the green and navy plaid, and I have never ever tried incorporating the pattern into my wardrobe…until now! I saw these gorgeous Plus Size Hampshire Velveteen Ankle Pants from Talbots, and determined that this was my time to shine. Not only was I excited to try the soft material and new pattern, but I was even more thrilled when I found out that Talbots carries petite plus sizes. Can I get an “amen?!” As a plus size woman who stands at 5’2, I can never find pants that don’t need to be hemmed to fit me properly. So when I received the pants in the mail, I was so excited to slide into them and not have them drag on the floor. I want to wear these pants to work and to my company Christmas party, so I decided to pair the pants with a Velvet-Trim Bi-Stretch Wool Blazer and a simple Pima Cotton Bateau Neck Tee, also from Talbots. I chose the blazer because the velvet trim really ties the piece it into the pants, and the Bi-Stretch feature also caught my attention because who doesn’t love a stretchy blazer?

As if comfortable blazers and well-fitted pants aren’t exciting enough, Talbots is having its first ever Holiday Friends & Family Event where you can get 40% off your entire purchase! Whether you’ve been naughty or nice there’s something sweet for everyone at Talbots! Visit Stylinity to get the coupon code so you can start shopping!

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a petite size 16W in the Plus Size Hampshire Velveteen Ankle Pants from Talbots, which is my usual size, and the pants fit me perfectly! I’ve been feeling orange lately. Not blue, orange. Maybe it’s this dress. I have been craving orange hues like rust, copper, and bronze, and I think I found the perfect shade with this Rayleigh Off Shoulder Dress from Fashion Nova Curve.

I love a good body con dress, and you all know that anything that falls off the shoulders is an automatic must-have for me. Not only does this dress incorporate both of those styles, but the puffy sleeves also add a cozy look and feel that make it practical for the season.

This piece could be worn now, during the winter months, well into spring and maybe even on the chillier nights of summer. But since it is December and freezing here in Chicago, I paired the dress with beige knee high boots to stay warm. I purchased these boots from Lane Bryant last winter, but I found some similar and cheaper ones from Brinley Co.  The material of the dress is also thick, which makes it warmer than your average body con dress. The way the dress hugs my curves makes me feel really sexy, but the oversized sleeves give me sweatshirt vibes, and I am digging how I can get the best of both worlds: being dressed up, and wrapping my self up in an oversized sweater. How can you go wrong?

The holidays can be such a fun time no matter how, where, or with whom you celebrate! This holiday season, I am traveling back to my home city of Los Angeles where I will enjoy Christmas with family—and the sun! But I typically spend the holidays in freezing temperatures whether it be in my other home city of Boise, Idaho, or my current home base: Chicago. Other than spending time with my loved ones, my favorite part about the holidays is the fashion, of course….Would you expect anything else from me?

My holiday activities are anything but traditional, and they change every year, which means I have to have different looks that are perfect for every occasion. So I wanted to show you some of the different looks I will be sporting this season and where I will be wearing them to!

I got all of my looks at Gordmans, one of my favorite places to shop for my most-coveted fashion and home decor brands on a budget! Gordmans’ mission is to thrill every guest with fun finds and exciting deals at every turn. There’s no need to hunt for bargains at Gordmans, and that’s because it is an off-price retailer. Off-price retailers buy excess inventory from department and specialty stores, then sell it at greatly reduced prices. For shoppers, that means exceptional deals on designer and name brand fashion. (Which is exactly how I scored two items from Express—that were originally priced at more than $90 each—for under $25. Scroll down to check out how I worked those items into these looks!) I also love that Gordmans has an extensive plus size section with many different brands and styles.

GLAM
I love a good holiday dress that doesn’t scream “deck the halls” right away, but has the potential to be dressed up or down for any holiday occasion. Some love to accessorize their holiday looks with embellished Christmas sweaters and Christmas light necklaces, but I prefer an elegant dress that’s ready for any impromptu friend or family photo op. I love the velvet details on the dress, which make the garment feel even more festive. I’m wearing this dress to a holiday dinner with family, but it could also work for holiday photos, too! Now, let’s talk about sizing and fit: This fit and flare skater dress is so flattering, and the materials is very stretchy and comfortable. I am wearing a size 2x, which is my usual size, and it fits perfectly.

PARTY
One of my favorite times during the holidays is when my best friend throws a Christmas cookie decorating party, and we all get together to laugh over too much wine and sugar. I love getting dressed up for this party, but as the night goes on we end up on the couch watching a movie. So while I do want a glam look, I also want something that’s cozy and that I can chill out in. When I first saw this green oversized cardigan, I knew I had to have it. I rarely ever wear an oversized cardigan or outerwear because I feel like it could come off as frumpy, but I fell in love with this cardigan instantly. So I decided to pair it with this sequin mini skirt—also from Express and found at Gordmans (link)—to elevate the cardigan. I also added in this lace camisole to put a sexy touch on the look.  This look could also work for holiday photos or parties. I am wearing an XL in the cardigan and the skirt, which is two sizes smaller than my usual size, but the cardigan is oversized, and the skirt runs big. So they fit perfectly! I am wearing a size 2X in the camisole, and it fits perfectly!

CHILL
After all the food, wrapping, and last minute gift shopping, my go-to outfit is something comfortable and cozy without sacrificing style. That’s why this striped sweater, these burgundy leggings, and some knee-high boots make up the perfect look for opening gifts in the morning, volunteering, or just hanging out with friends and family. While my urge is to stay in jimmies all day, it makes me feel lazy and lackluster. But let’s face it, leggings and a cozy sweater aren’t too far away from jimmies…it’s just all about how you style and work it!
Sweater: Love by Marcy – $12.99
Leggings: Zac & Rachel – $16.99

Because I scored all three of these looks—accessories and shoes included—for less than $150 in total, I may have also gotten some Christmas shopping done while I was at Gordmans….most of which was probably for me, but still!

Plus Size Intimates

My Body is Fantasy

Chicago fashion blogger, Chicago plus size fashion blogger, natalie Craig, natalie in the city, plus size fashion, Chicago fashion, plus size fashion blogger, eff your beauty standards, fatshion, skorch magazine, Chicago model, plus size model, plus size petite, affordable plus size clothing, embrace your curves, plus model magazine, petite plus size, body positive, parfait lingerie, Victorias secret, Victorias secret fashion show, plus size lingerie

I grew up feeling that my body wasn’t valuable, beautiful, or worthy because I was fat. Today, I stand proud in my body. When I look in the mirror, I find beauty in every curve, dimple, and scar. So much so that it’s almost hard to recall what influences made me feel so inferior and ashamed of my body as I was growing up. But when I hear about companies like Victoria’s Secret telling the mass media that fat bodies cannot be a part of their “perfect fantasy,” the emptiness of feeling unworthy starts to feel all to familiar. When I was a child and a teenager, there were no brands that created a “fantasy” that revolved around plus size bodies. And while Victoria’s Secret’s statement about fat bodies not being good enough or sexy enough to walk in their fashion show may have shook me years ago, it was easily shrugged off because I have brands like Parfait Lingerie that lead the way for bodies of all shapes, sizes, and colors.

And because of brands like Parfait Lingerie, I see my body as fantasy—not like the watered down fantasy that has been forced upon us since our existence, telling us that we aren’t good enough, and that we never will be. But a fantasy that I hold within myself. No matter how my body looks or how much it jiggles, it radiates fantasy and beauty. I create these feelings within myself with the help of clothing and lingerie that make me feel sexy and radiant, like this Cora lingerie set in nude from Parfait Lingerie. When I slip on the Cora Bikini and the Cora Unlined Longline Bra, my worries, insecurities, and the criticisms of the outside world fall off of me. If you’ve been a fan of Natalie in the City, you know how much fashion plays into my confidence. I began channeling confidence through clothing when I was 8. While nothing in the juniors’ section would fit me right, I was able to find styles and pieces that gave me this sense of pride. Fashion acted as a shield or armor from the bullies who would mock me for my weight and size, and it’s exactly how I protect myself from baseless comments from CEOs who are narrow-mindedly leading companies that have a stance that is both outdated and unrelatable to consumers today—most of whom are size 16 or larger. This Cora lingerie set is my safe haven from hate. I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that you are good enough, and for every brand or bully out there who wants to tell you that you aren’t, there are a hundred more allies like Parfait Lingerie that have your back and see you for the radiant human you are.

When it comes to plus size workout sets, have you ever seen anything cooler than this look? I haven’t, and I have also never been more excited to work out. This set from Fabletics (this look has sold out, but you can see it here: FIERCE) gives me all the motivation I need to get out and reach my goals. You know I turn to fashion to channel confidence, and that also applies to what I wear to the gym.

If you follow me on Instagram, I have been taking you behind the scenes with me on my exercise activities like working out with my body positive personal trainer and Chicago dance classes with DivaDance. And while the outfits I’ve worn to dance class or personal training sessions haven’t been all that exciting, that’s about to change now that I have joined the Fabletics VIP Membership.

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size XL in the Onyx Philomena L/S Top, which is two sizes smaller than my usual size, and it fits perfectly. I am wearing a size XL/XXL in the Onyx Seamless Mid-Rise Statement Capri, which is my usual size, and they fit perfectly! This material is extremely stretchy and comfortable.

I am constantly on the hunt for jeans that fit and feel like leggings. There is nothing worse than sliding into a pair of jeans that don’t have the right amount of stretch to them. All of my jeans must be stretchy and comfortable to wear all day. I have a lot of go-to places where I can find jeans that fit the bill every time. But as more brands begin to offer plus sizes, it seems as though it’s harder to find jeans that fit my short frame and show off my curves with form-fitting material, rather than hiding them with looser-fitting styles.

While this is truly frustrating, I think I may have found a place that sells denim that fits me like a glove—and looks so good on my curves (YASS)! Royalty For Me Jeans just launched under the YMI Jeans brands, and I got to try out a few pairs. One of my favorite fits were these Hyperstretch Skinny Jeans in Copper—did you catch the “hyperstretch” part? As I am sure you can tell, these jeans are so stretchy, without losing their form-fitting fit. Comfort meets quality, which is a win-win for me. While these jeans do stretch, they also include a tummy control panel in the front for extra support. I especially like this feature because while I love my body to the moon and back, I sometimes struggle with my stomach and how it looks in jeans—especially while wearing a curve hugging, tight top like the one I am currently sporting. Now, a lot of tummy control panels can be so problematic. I have had a hard time wearing tummy control jeans because they can be so tight or hard to sit in all day. But I am happy to report that these jeans are definitely breathable while offering that extra support—if you want it! Not only is the fit on point, I love the color, and the jeans come in 11 other hues, too! Check them out here: WOMEN PLUS SIZE HYPERSTRETCH SKINNY JEAN Since the jeans are definitely the star of the show, I wanted to create a look that would complement it. I threw on my fave military-inspired jacket, which I have had for years, a Torrid tank top, and my new favorite over-the-knee boots from Torrid.

Where do you like to shop for jeans?

SIZING INFO: I am wearing a size 16W in the Hyperstretch Skinny Jeans in Copper, which is my usual size, and these jeans fit perfectly! If you visit Natalie in the City frequently, you may be thinking, “Wait, Natalie! You are usually a size 18!” This is true, but when clothing comes in a “wide fit” like these jeans, I tend to order a 16W as they are more true to size.
